Is EA Sports FC 27 Worth It? Critics vs Players

Critics average 80 on OpenCritic, but only 55% of Steam reviews are positive. Where the two sides agree, where they split, and how we reach a 7.2.

Verdict

A sharper game of football, with smarter tactics and a deeper Career Mode, but Steam players are far less impressed than critics. Buy it for Career or on-pitch play; skip it if you mainly want Ultimate Team changes or The Grounds.

What works

  • Expanded Tactics system with separate in- and out-of-possession instructions (IGN, Game Informer).
  • Career Mode transfers rebuilt around staged negotiations and rival bids (VGC, IGN, Game Informer).
  • Reworked crossing and corners that give more control in the box (IGN, VGC).
  • Full feature parity on Switch 2, including The Grounds (Nintendo Life).

What doesn't

  • The Grounds is a thin headline mode, with progression currency you can also buy (IGN, Insider Gaming, Game Informer).
  • CPU pathing, passing and teammate decisions still misfire (IGN, Game Informer).
  • Only 55% positive on Steam, with bugs and server problems common in negative reviews (Steam).
  • The Switch 2 version is stuck at 30fps without crossplay (Nintendo Life).

How we score

Evidence-based review · scores read on 28 September 2026. This is a synthesis of published criticism and Steam player reviews, not a hands-on review: AFK Journal has not played the game, and every claim below links to its source.

EA Sports FC 27 is a good football game with the widest gap between critics and players of any review we have run so far. Critics average 80 on OpenCritic, only 55% of 4,636 Steam reviews are positive, and our score is 7.2 out of 10: Good.

The score blends the OpenCritic Top Critic Average (70%) with Steam's share of positive reviews (30%), the same formula behind our Control Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall reviews. Developed by EA Vancouver and EA Romania, the game launched on 25 September 2026 for PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch and Switch 2, after seven days of early access for Ultimate Edition owners from 18 September. The standard edition costs $69.99 or £59.99 on Steam, and VGC counts it as the 34th edition of a series that began in 1993.

What do critics agree on?

The football itself is sharper. Every review we read praises changes on the pitch. IGN calls the expanded Tactics system easily the best addition: it explains why formations work and lets you set separate instructions in and out of possession. IGN also credits improved crossing and corners. Game Informer says through balls now need better aim and manual defending is rewarded, and Insider Gaming, which tested the Competitive setting in Ultimate Team and offline Career, found the gameplay addictive.

Career Mode got the most meaningful upgrade. Transfers now run through staged negotiations, with instalments, bonuses and rival clubs able to hijack deals. VGC counts it among the most notable improvements, IGN calls Career substantially deeper, and Game Informer likes the back-and-forth of negotiations and the new unexpected events, even if it finds the changes more granular than impactful.

The Grounds is the weak spot. EA's new open-world hub replaces the old Clubs mode as the home of small-sided and 11v11 online matches. Insider Gaming calls it mundane and lacklustre, Game Informer says it is not a destination mode, and IGN questions why it exists at all, citing frame-rate drops, stiff voice acting and progression tied to coins and XP that can also be bought with real money.

Where do critics split?

On The Grounds' future, and on how much a yearly update should change. VGC gave the game 4/5 and is the most hopeful: it argues The Grounds could become a viable new pillar next to Ultimate Team and Career, and that the series keeps its place as the best football game on the market. IGN (7/10) is the harshest on the core game. Its praise for the tactics comes with CPU pathing that breaks down on higher difficulties, passes that snap towards the wrong teammate and frequent disconnects in its first week.

Ultimate Team divides reviewers too. VGC calls this year's update perhaps the mode's least impactful in years and finds the FUT Gallery both too simple and too fiddly, while Game Informer says the Gallery and the other Ultimate Team tweaks are what keep it coming back. Nintendo Life gives the Switch 2 version 8/10 because it still plays a great game of football, despite the technical limits covered below.

What do Steam players say?

Much less than critics do. At 09:12 UTC on 28 September, Steam showed 2,550 positive and 2,086 negative reviews across all languages: 55.0%, rated Mixed. English-language reviews are almost identical at 56.5% (947 of 1,676), and reviews from people who bought the game on Steam land at 55.6%. The trend is down: Steam's review histogram puts the positive share at 58% for the week starting 17 September, which covers early access, and 52% for the week starting 24 September. Steam's rating already excludes review bombs it judges off-topic.

That is normal for the series on Steam. On the same morning, EA Sports FC 26 sat at 51% positive across 108,133 reviews and FC 25 at 53% across 107,249, while their Metascores are 77 and 76. The gap between critics and Steam players is a pattern of the series, not something new in FC 27.

To see what drives the complaints, we ran a keyword count on the 500 most recent negative English reviews and 500 recent positive ones from Steam's public review API. It is a crude text match, not sentiment analysis. Gameplay and defending terms appear in 22% of negative reviews (7% of positives), bugs, glitches and crashes in 20% (4%), money, microtransactions and 'pay to win' in 11% (2%), and servers, lag or disconnects in 9% (1%). The Grounds comes up in 7% of negatives and 6% of positives, so players mention it far less than critics do.

These are not snap judgements: the median playtime at the time of review was 10.2 hours for negative reviews and 11.1 hours for positive ones. Steam's API counted 29,163 people playing at 09:12 UTC on a Monday morning in Europe, and SteamDB recorded a peak of 95,985 concurrent players on 27 September.

How does it run on PC, consoles and Switch 2?

The clearest platform caveat is Switch 2. Nintendo Life reports that the Switch 2 version has every mode the other versions have, including The Grounds, but still runs at 30fps with no performance mode, has no crossplay and keeps a separate, smaller Ultimate Team transfer market. That also makes The Grounds, which is online-only, harder to fill on Nintendo's console, and Nintendo Life notes that eFootball Kick-Off runs at 60fps on the same hardware.

On PC, performance terms such as fps or stutter appear in only 3% of negative Steam reviews, far fewer than bugs or server complaints, and the frame-rate drops IGN mentions are in The Grounds hub. EA's first update, version 1.0.1 on 23 September, fixed unexpectedly high ping in The Grounds' league matches, failed hot joins, blocked five-star skill moves and unspecified stability issues. EA also says the PC version may require the EA app.

How we got to 7.2

The critic half is OpenCritic's Top Critic Average divided by ten; the player half is Steam's percentage of positive reviews across all languages, divided by ten, which we use in full for a game's first 60 days. Critics carry 70% of the weight and players 30%. We may adjust the result by up to half a point for problems documented by at least two independent sources.

We did not apply an adjustment. Monetisation and online problems are documented by more than one source, IGN and Insider Gaming among them, but they are already the main reason the player half is low, and adjusting again would count them twice. EA's 1.0.1 update has also addressed some of the online issues. We will re-read the numbers at 30 days and after any major gameplay update.

Should you buy EA Sports FC 27?

Buy it if you play Career Mode. The transfer overhaul and dynamic player ratings are the upgrades reviewers agree on most.

Buy it if you want the best-reviewed on-pitch football this year. Every review we read rates the gameplay changes positively, and VGC and Nintendo Life both rate it above its rivals.

Try it first if you are unsure: EA offered EA Play members a trial of up to 10 hours from 22 September.

Wait or skip if you mainly want Ultimate Team or The Grounds. Reviewers call this year's Ultimate Team changes modest, and The Grounds needs more content, which Insider Gaming says is coming. On Switch 2, know what you are getting: every mode, but at 30fps and without crossplay.

Everything we publish on the game will live on the EA Sports FC 27 hub. If you are deciding what else to play this autumn, our list of October 2026 release dates covers the next wave.
