Great
Verdict
Buy it if you want a hand-made survival world built around construction and co-op exploration: 1.0 finally finishes the map and the story. Wait, or skip it, if you need sharp action combat, crossplay or the Xbox version.
What works
- A building system critics rank among the best in the genre (TheSixthAxis, GamingBolt)
- A hand-crafted world with dungeons and Sanctums instead of a procedural map (GamingBolt, CGMagazine)
- 1.0 completes the map and story with Cinder's Cradle and a level cap of 50 (Keen Games, NoobFeed)
- PC Early Access owners keep their saves and do not pay again (Keen Games)
- PS5 version reported as stable in performance mode (The Nerd Stash)
What doesn't
- Combat feels loose and is the most common complaint (TheSixthAxis, Steam reviews)
- A light central story that mostly routes you to new areas (NoobFeed)
- Post-launch stutter and save-migration bugs on PC, partly hotfixed (Keen Games, Steam reviews)
- No crossplay, and no Xbox version until spring 2027 (Keen Games, Gematsu)

How we scoreEvidence-based review · scores read on 22 October 2026
Enshrouded 1.0 is worth buying if you like building and exploring more than fighting: the critics who reviewed the full release average 86 on OpenCritic, and 80.9% of the 3,148 Steam reviews posted since launch are positive. Our score is 8.4, Great, held back mainly by loose combat and some post-launch performance complaints.
This is a synthesis, not a hands-on review. It combines the OpenCritic and Metacritic pages, every Steam review posted between the 1.0 launch on 15 October and 09:15 UTC on 22 October, five full critic reviews and Keen Games' 1.0 changelog. The arithmetic is shown below. Enshrouded spent almost two years in Early Access before this release, which matters for how the numbers should be read.

What do critics agree on about Enshrouded 1.0?
Building is the reason to play. TheSixthAxis (9/10) says the building system "might be second to none", fiddly but very adaptable. GamingBolt (9/10) finds the biggest 1.0 improvements in building and combat, with more accessible construction tools.
The world is made by hand. GamingBolt contrasts Enshrouded's hand-crafted map, NPC settlements and boss dungeons with randomly generated survival games. CGMagazine (8.5/10) compares its puzzle Sanctums and map-revealing Spires to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and notes that, unlike many survival games, there is no urgent need to eat or drink.
1.0 finishes what Early Access started. NoobFeed (90/100, on PS5 Pro) lists a volcanic region, more dungeons, dozens of new enemy types, a level cap of 50 and new spells, which matches Keen's changelog. CGMagazine reports that Keen expects the story plus the important side quests to take about 100 hours.
It is huge, sometimes too huge. NoobFeed calls the scale both one of the game's greatest strengths and one of its biggest problems: 100-plus hours of exploring and levelling, and easily another 50 if construction takes hold of you.
Where do critics split?
Combat. TheSixthAxis calls combat the game's weakest area: not bad, but a little awkward, with a parry-and-stun system that feels loose and sometimes inconsistent. GamingBolt, which focused on a melee build, had plenty of fun once the reworked skill tree unlocked longer combos such as an upward slash.
Story. NoobFeed finds the central story light, mostly a framework that sends you to new areas and dungeons. The Nerd Stash (9.5/10) instead praises the environmental storytelling and says the reveals in the new Cinder's Cradle biome will reward long-time followers.
Originality. GamingBolt notes that the core loop of gathering, building and attracting NPCs has not changed much, and that Keen took an additive approach rather than a rethink. TheSixthAxis argues the Shroud, the deadly fog you dive into for loot, is what makes it "not quite the same" as other survival games.
Who has not weighed in yet. As of 22 October, OpenCritic lists no scored 1.0 review from IGN, GameSpot, PC Gamer or Eurogamer. IGN's entry is its January 2024 Early Access review (7/10), and Rock, Paper, Shotgun's 2024 piece is unscored. The 1.0 consensus so far comes from mid-sized outlets such as GamingBolt, CGMagazine and TheSixthAxis, plus regional sites including Gamersky (8.2/10), SECTOR.sk (8.5/10) and GAMES.CH (85%). That is one more reason to read this score as an early one.

| Outlet | Score | Date | Main point |
|---|---|---|---|
| GamingBolt | 9/10 | 14 Oct 2026 | Building and combat improved most; core loop unchanged |
| The Nerd Stash (PS5) | 9.5/10 | 14 Oct 2026 | Strong ending; console version runs well |
| TheSixthAxis | 9/10 | 16 Oct 2026 | Building second to none; combat the weakest part |
| CGMagazine (PC) | 8.5/10 | 16 Oct 2026 | Breath of the Wild-style exploration; about 100 hours |
| NoobFeed (PS5 Pro) | 90/100 | 20 Oct 2026 | Enormous, but the story is light |
What do Steam players say since 1.0?
The headline figure on the Steam store page, Very Positive at 85.9% of 109,728 reviews, mostly reflects the Early Access years. Counting only reviews written since 1.0 went live on 15 October, the share drops to 80.9% of 3,148. Launch day was the high point at 87.9%; every day since has landed between about 78% and 80%.

| Day (UTC) | Reviews | Positive |
|---|---|---|
| 15 October | 712 | 87.9% |
| 16 October | 653 | 79.5% |
| 17 October | 424 | 77.6% |
| 18 October | 406 | 78.1% |
| 19 October | 315 | 79.0% |
| 20 October | 288 | 79.2% |
| 21 October | 287 | 79.1% |
| Total, 15–22 October | 3,148 | 80.9% |
Language matters. English-language reviews are 82.5% positive (1,865), German 87.8% (337) and Brazilian Portuguese 92.8% (97), while Russian reviews sit at 68.1% (229) and Simplified Chinese at 49.7% (143). We have not found a documented cause for the Chinese-language split, so treat it as a signal rather than an explanation.
In a keyword count of the 285 negative English reviews posted since launch, the most frequent subjects were building (21%), combat (19%), enemies and difficulty (16%), performance such as stutter or freezes (15%) and story and quests (14%). The recurring points, paraphrased: attacks that cannot be cancelled into a dodge, menus that feel designed for a controller, freezes that started with the 1.0 update and, for some groups, the lack of crossplay. Most of these reviewers are not newcomers: the median author has about 66 hours on record.
Interest is not the problem. Steam's weekly most-played chart on 20 October listed Enshrouded 29th with a peak of 90,443 concurrent players, up from outside the top 100 the week before. With that many new and returning players the review count will keep growing quickly, and the per-day figures above are the ones to watch for a trend in either direction.

How does Enshrouded 1.0 run on PC and PS5?
Enshrouded 1.0 launched on PC and PS5 on 15 October; the Xbox Series X|S version was delayed to spring 2027. Keen's launch FAQ says crossplay is being worked on with no estimate, and PC Early Access owners do not pay again. On Steam the game lists at $39.99 (10% off, $35.99, when we checked) and is marked Steam Deck Verified.
Keen shipped two hotfixes in the first two days. The second, hotfix 1.0.0.2, fixed a crash during save migration, a grey-fog rendering bug on Nvidia cards and several server crashes, but corrupted Early Access characters are now skipped rather than converted while a repair tool is prepared. On PS5, The Nerd Stash reports about 50 hours of co-op in performance mode without crashes or slowdown, even at maximum enemy density.
On PC, the minimum specification on Steam asks for 16 GB of RAM, a GTX 1060 6 GB or RX 580 6 GB and 60 GB of storage. Keen's changelog says 1.0 also improves performance on handhelds, low-end graphics cards and the Steam Deck, which fits the game's Verified badge but does not explain the freezes some players describe.
How we got to 8.4
Our formula weights critics at 70% and Steam players at 30%. Enshrouded needs one adjustment: OpenCritic's published Top Critic Average (81.85) mixes 1.0 reviews with Early Access reviews from January 2024, such as IGN's 7/10, and Steam's all-time score is dominated by Early Access too. Because this review is about 1.0, both sides use only reviews written after the 1.0 build reached critics and players.

| Component | Input | Value | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Critics | OpenCritic Top Critics, 1.0 reviews: 85, 90, 85, 90, 82, 85, 85 | 86.0 → 8.60 | 70% |
| Players | Steam reviews 15–22 Oct, 2,546 of 3,148 positive | 80.9% → 8.09 | 30% |
| Correction | No problem documented by two independent outlets | 0 | — |
| Result | 0.7 × 8.60 + 0.3 × 8.09 = 8.447 | 8.4 (Great) | — |
The choice does not change the label. With OpenCritic's published 81.85 the score would be 8.2; with Metacritic's 88 it would be 8.6. Both are still Great. The critic sample is small (seven scored Top Critic reviews), so we will re-read the numbers after 30 days or after the next large patch. We applied no correction: the PC freezes are real in player reviews, but Keen patched crashes within two days and The Nerd Stash reports a stable PS5 version.
For scale, the same formula gave Valor Mortis a 7.8 and Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 an 8.7 this week.
Should you buy Enshrouded 1.0?
- Builders and co-op groups: yes. Building is the part of the game critics praise most.
- Returning Early Access players: it costs nothing on PC, but Keen recommends a new world; our guide to what changed in 1.0 and what happens to your save covers the skill reset and the migration bug.
- Action-RPG fans who want tight combat: wait for a sale or skip; combat is the most common complaint.
- Xbox players and mixed-platform groups: wait. Xbox arrives in spring 2027 and crossplay has no date.
