How we scoreEvidence-based review · scores read on 26 October 2026. AFK Journal has not played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4: this verdict combines published critic reviews and Steam player data through a public formula, shown in full below.
Modern Warfare 4 is worth it if you want the campaign or DMZ, the two parts critics praise most: the Top Critic Average on OpenCritic is 85 and 80% of Steam reviews are positive, which gives it 8.4 (Great) on our formula. Multiplayer is the weak spot, and since the full launch on 23 October only 61% of new Steam reviews have been positive.
This review is built on the OpenCritic and Metacritic pages, Steam's daily review histogram, Activision's launch patch notes, six published reviews (GameSpot, Game Informer, Nintendo Life, CGMagazine, Press Start and GamingBolt) and launch coverage from Push Square and Eurogamer. Infinity Ward's game launched worldwide on 23 October 2026, as Xbox Wire announced, on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, after a campaign early access that began on 16 October; Steam lists it at $69.99.

What do critics agree on?
The campaign is the best the series has had in years, according to most reviews. CGMagazine calls it one of the best in the franchise, GameSpot says the two intertwined storylines deliver a satisfying conclusion, and Press Start singles out the Korean storyline built around conscript Private Park. GamingBolt also praises Park and his Sierra-1 squad, and Mads Mikkelsen's villain. Game Informer adds that the South Korean unit's dynamics recall the original Modern Warfare trilogy, and GamingBolt calls the plot and dialogue a clear improvement on recent entries.
DMZ is the surprise. Game Informer calls it the series' most convincing extraction shooter, CGMagazine says it is fully realised, with campaign-linked missions, crafting and a base, and Nintendo Life describes it as gripping. Several reviews pick out the Hajin map: GameSpot for its size, weather and enemy behaviour, Press Start for the unscripted chaos it produces.
The shooting itself gets little criticism. Nintendo Life calls the movement and gunplay best-in-class, Press Start likes the weighty weapons and slower, more grounded pace, and GameSpot notes that movement stays fluid without the omnimovement of recent Black Ops games. Kill Block, a modular multiplayer map that keeps changing layout, is the multiplayer idea most reviewers liked, from GameSpot to CGMagazine.

Where do critics split?
Scores sit in a narrow band. The reviews we read run from 8/10 (GameSpot, and GamingBolt's campaign-only review in progress) through 8.5 (Game Informer, Press Start) to 9/10 (Nintendo Life, CGMagazine). The disagreement is about multiplayer and the shape of the campaign.
Press Start is the hardest on multiplayer: strict skill-based matchmaking without open playlists means sweaty lobbies and long queues, it says, and some of the twelve core 6v6 maps have frustrating layouts and spawns. Game Informer finds it less fluid than recent Black Ops entries and repetitive over time; CGMagazine thinks the beta's spawn problems are mostly, not entirely, fixed.
On the campaign, CGMagazine and Nintendo Life both describe linear, heavily scripted levels, and GamingBolt found its single open combat mission frustrating. GameSpot calls the final boss fights brief and easy, and finds it tacky that Vault Edition buyers get DMZ advantages. CGMagazine adds that DMZ's attachments are expensive and cash is scarce.
Even the details divide reviewers. GamingBolt says Mads Mikkelsen gives the antagonist real weight, while Game Informer thinks his character and Prisca Kim's are underused. Game Informer calls the large Combat Outpost mode, which scales to 24 against 24, exhilarating; Nintendo Life found the 32-player Ground War repetitive and preferred the smaller modes.

| Outlet | Score | Platform | Main reservation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Life | 9/10 | Switch 2 | Linear campaign, busy DMZ menus |
| CGMagazine | 9/10 | PC | Scripted levels, scarce DMZ cash |
| Game Informer | 8.5/10 | PC | Rushed arcs, repetitive multiplayer |
| Press Start | 8.5/10 | Not stated | Strict matchmaking, maps and spawns |
| GameSpot | 8/10 | PC | Brief boss fights, Vault Edition DMZ perks |
| GamingBolt | 8/10 (campaign, in progress) | PS5 | Punishing tactical sections |
What do Steam players say?
Steam tells two stories. The campaign early-access crowd loved it: daily reviews were above 90% positive from 17 to 20 October. Since multiplayer opened to everyone on 23 October, the daily share has been between 58% and 64%, and the four days to 26 October add up to 1,923 positive and 1,222 negative reviews. The all-language total still stands at 79.8% of 8,979 because the early reviews were so strong.
The complaints are mostly about multiplayer. Push Square reported that the early verdict was brutal, citing weak maps, broken spawns and heavy skill-based matchmaking, and Eurogamer covered DMZ players' anger at Possum, a trait that lets you revive yourself once at the cost of your loot. On Xbox, a post on r/gaming about the Modern Warfare 4 background that appeared on dashboards at launch reached 15,316 upvotes and 3,296 comments. We have not classified individual Steam reviews, and Steam already filters off-topic review bombs, so this is the reviews' timing, not a full breakdown of why.
Infinity Ward has started patching. The launch patch notes list fixes on 23 and 24 October for Hijack spawns and respawn timing, a Search and Destroy defuse exploit, four-player parties in Free-for-All and PC stability; they do not mention skill-based matchmaking or Possum. Our daily Steam tracking has the day-by-day figures from early access.
How does it run on PC, PS5 and Switch 2?
Nintendo Life reports that the Switch 2 version, ported by Digital Legends, runs the campaign at 30fps, targets 40fps docked in DMZ and 60fps in most multiplayer modes, with lower visual detail than other platforms but crossplay and cross-progression. GamingBolt found the PS5 version rock-solid, apart from some pop-in during fast movement and weaker facial detail outside cutscenes. On PC, Game Informer saw slow frame rates and texture loading in busy campaign scenes, and Press Start noticed vegetation pop-in. Activision's patch notes include several PC crash and stability fixes since launch.

How we got to 8.4
Our formula weights critics at 70% and players at 30%. The critic score is OpenCritic's Top Critic Average divided by ten: 85.39 becomes 8.539. In the first 60 days the player score is Steam's all-time share of positive reviews divided by ten: 79.75% becomes 7.975, from 8,979 reviews, well above our 500-review minimum.
0.7 × 8.539 = 5.977, plus 0.3 × 7.975 = 2.393, gives 8.370, which rounds to 8.4: Great. We applied no correction. The launch problems documented by two or more sources are design complaints about matchmaking, maps and spawns rather than a broken release, and our rule reserves the ±0.5 correction for broken launches, documented performance failures or aggressive monetisation.
Should you buy Modern Warfare 4?
Buy it for the campaign, which critics rate as the series' best in years, at roughly eight hours according to GameSpot. Buy it for DMZ if you like extraction shooters: Game Informer compares it favourably with ARC Raiders and Marathon, and our DMZ explainer covers what you keep and lose. If you mainly play 6v6 multiplayer and hate strict matchmaking, the post-launch Steam reviews are the better guide: wait for the first season or a matchmaking change.
On Switch 2, Nintendo Life describes the full package, with crossplay and cross-progression, and frame rates that never got in the way. Before choosing an edition, note GameSpot's objection to the DMZ advantages bundled with the Vault Edition; our release and editions guide lists what each edition includes.
