Modern Warfare 4 Prestige Explained: Classic vs Regular and Rewards

Modern Warfare 4 lets you pick Classic or Regular Prestige at every reset. What each path keeps, the 20% XP boost, all ten Prestige rewards and the camo ladder.

Modern Warfare 4 asks you to choose every time you Prestige: Classic Prestige resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class loadouts in exchange for a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and extra cosmetics, while Regular Prestige sends you back to Level 1 but lets you keep everything. Either way there are 10 Prestige levels, followed by Prestige Master levels that run to 1,000, according to Activision's official Progression and Prestige post.

This guide is built on that post (19 October 2026) and on Activision's Loadout Intel and DMZ Forward Operating Base posts, all published on Steam, checked on 22 October 2026, the day before launch. Nothing here comes from hands-on play, and launch-day patches can still move the numbers.

How does levelling work before you can Prestige?

Your main career runs from Private I (Level 1) to Commander (Level 55). You earn XP in Multiplayer and DMZ, and in Call of Duty: Warzone once Season 1 arrives shortly after launch. Every level unlocks at least one item: weapons, Lethal and Tactical equipment, Field Upgrades, Perks and Killstreaks. Create-a-Class itself opens at Level 4, which is also where the first batch of base weapons becomes available.

DMZ has its own separate track of 70 levels, which unlocks Forward Operating Base stations, station upgrades, 3D Printer recipes, Operator skins and consumables. The traffic is one-way: DMZ XP also counts toward your Level 1-55 progression, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP never raise your DMZ level.

Classic vs Regular Prestige: what is the difference?

This is the first Call of Duty with two Prestige paths. Classic Prestige is the traditional reset-and-rebuild: your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress are wiped, and you get a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetic rewards in return. Regular Prestige also restarts you at Level 1, but every unlock and custom loadout stays intact.

The choice is not permanent. You pick a track when you complete Level 55, and the game offers the choice again every time you finish a Prestige level and enter the next one.

Which Prestige path should you pick?

Our reading of the official rules, not a tested verdict: Regular is the safe default for anyone who plays a few evenings a week and has a set of classes they like, because nothing is taken away. Classic suits players who enjoy rebuilding from a starter loadout and want the 20% faster climb and the "Prime" versions of each Prestige reward.

Two things push the decision. Most Prestige rewards are shared by both tracks, so Regular players are not locked out of the core rewards. And because you can change track at every Prestige, one Classic run to bank a Permanent Unlock Token, followed by Regular runs, is a legitimate option. Activision has not said whether the 20% boost stacks across several Classic Prestiges.

What should you spend the Permanent Unlock Token on?

Choosing the Classic track earns a Permanent Unlock Token, which keeps one Level Unlock item of your choice available through the rest of your career, including future Classic resets. Activision's own advice is to spend it on Perks, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and Equipment rather than weapons, because buying a weapon blueprint from the Store or earning one in a Battle Pass already makes the base weapon permanently available.

The best candidates are the late unlocks you would otherwise wait longest to get back. These are the high-level non-weapon items from the official unlock table:

What rewards does each Prestige level give?

Each Prestige level is themed on a different Infinity Ward game and hands out a reward every ten levels. Prestige 1, inspired by the original Call of Duty (2003), gives the Sandstorm Operator skin for Army SF Airborne instantly, then a loading screen at Level 10, an emblem at 20, the "Engage!" weapon charm at 30, the "Men of Service" large decal at 40 and a Mosin-Nagant blueprint at 50.

How does Prestige Master work, all the way to Level 1,000?

Finish Prestige 10 and you enter Prestige Master, where your level stops resetting and climbs past 55 up to 1,000. Rewards arrive every five to ten levels until Level 99, then every 25 levels. The instant reward is the "Paragon" Operator skin for Park and an orange Level Colour; the 56-99 track adds a loading screen at 60, an emblem at 65, a weapon charm at 70, a weapon sticker at 80 and the "Master Renegade" Han 86 blueprint at 90.

From Level 100 a new Level Colour (starting with Navy) unlocks every 25 levels, including multi-colour and animated options, and every 100 levels adds a set of legacy Prestige icons from past Call of Duty games. Level 1,000 makes you a Prestige Legend; Activision lists those rewards as classified.

How does the camo grind work in Modern Warfare 4?

Camo progress is a single grind shared by Multiplayer, DMZ and, from Season 1, Warzone. It starts with eight Military camos per weapon, unlocked simply by levelling that weapon. The Han 86, for example, unlocks them at weapon levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57 and 65 on the way to its maximum of 72; other weapons use different thresholds.

Each weapon also has three Special camos tied to challenges such as mounted, suppressed or aim-down-sights kills. The targets change with the mode: because AI enemies count in DMZ, DMZ versions ask for more kills (the Han 86's mounted-kill camo needs 20 kills in Multiplayer or 75 in DMZ). Finish a challenge in any mode and the camo works everywhere.

The Multiplayer Mastery camos are Mercurial Drift, Polyatomic Reforged (three kills without taking damage, 300 times) and Orion Reforged (five kills without dying, 500 times). DMZ has Chiral (2,500 Tier 3+ enemy kills), Ripple Tide (exfil two Lieutenant dog tags in one deployment, 50 times) and Helio (25,000 kills with Legendary weapons on a max-level Operator). The three Warzone Mastery camos stay classified until Season 1.

How does Weapon Prestige work?

Weapon Prestige is optional and opens when a weapon hits its maximum level, which is also when its Apex Attachment unlocks. Entering it resets the weapon to Level 1 and relocks its attachments, except Apex and Weapon Blueprint attachments. Shared Attachments you unlocked on other weapons stay unlocked, and cosmetics such as blueprints, camos, reticles and stickers are kept.

All four rewards are versions of the Pyroclast camo: Pyroclast at Weapon Prestige 1 Level 1, Pyroclast Terminus at Weapon Prestige 1 max level, then automatic entry into Weapon Prestige Master, with no further reset, for Pyroclast Scatter at Level 150 and Pyroclast Cascade at Level 250. Shared Attachments are only unlocked once across all weapons; when a level would award one you already own, you get a Bonus Level Up instead.

What is DMZ Operator Prestige?

DMZ adds a fourth, separate Prestige tied to individual Operators, covered with every cost in our Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide and described in Activision's Forward Operating Base guide. Once an Active Duty Operator has earned 18 Trait Points (and is not MIA), you can Prestige them. The first time costs two weapons with three attachment slots each, a plate carrier, a backpack and four printer ingredients, all of Rare rarity or higher, plus DMZ Cash. In return the Operator's traits reset and they gain one random Permanent Prestige Trait, up to three in total.

Does DMZ early access progress carry over to launch?

Yes, for weapons. Activision says weapon levels, attachments and camos earned in DMZ Early Access, which opened on 20 October for digital pre-orders, are available in Multiplayer when the game launches on 23 October. Our release time and early access guide has the unlock time in every region. Modern Warfare 4 Level Unlocks reach Warzone with Season 1.

What we don't know yet

Activision has not published how much XP each level needs, whether the Classic XP boost stacks, what the Prestige Legend rewards are, or the Warzone Mastery camo challenges. The Season 1 date is also unconfirmed beyond "shortly after launch". We will update this guide when those details are official.

FAQ

When can you Prestige in Modern Warfare 4?

You can Prestige after completing Level 55 (Commander). At that point the game asks you to pick the Classic or Regular track, and it asks again every time you finish a Prestige level.

Can you switch between Classic and Regular Prestige?

Yes. Activision says you choose a track each time you enter a new Prestige level, so you can take Classic for one Prestige and Regular for the next.

Do you lose your unlocks with Regular Prestige?

No. Regular Prestige restarts your level at 1 but keeps every level unlock and your Create-a-Class loadouts. Only Classic Prestige relocks them, in exchange for a 20% XP boost, a Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics.

How many Prestige levels does Modern Warfare 4 have?

Ten Prestige levels, then Prestige Master, where your level keeps climbing from 56 to 1,000. Reaching Level 1,000 makes you a Prestige Legend; Activision has not revealed those rewards yet.

Does DMZ XP count toward Prestige?

DMZ XP counts toward your main Level 1-55 progression, so it helps you reach Prestige. It does not work the other way: Multiplayer and Warzone XP do not raise your separate DMZ Level 1-70.
