Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Explained: What You Keep, What You Lose

How DMZ works in Modern Warfare 4: deployments, exfil, what you keep or lose on death, Operators and Traits, the 1–70 level track and DMZ Prestige costs.

DMZ is Modern Warfare 4's extraction mode: you drop into Hajin alone or with a squad, loot, fight AI forces and rival players, and only keep what you carry out on the exfil helicopter. Die, and your Operator goes missing in action with their gear, but your Stash, your banked DMZ Cash and the XP you earned that run all stay with you.

This guide is built on Infinity Ward's two-part DMZ deep dive on callofduty.com (the FOB guide and the Hajin guide), the PlayStation Blog primer and the launch patch notes of 23 October 2026. Checked against the launch version on 24 October 2026; nothing here comes from our own play.

What is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?

DMZ is the third pillar of Modern Warfare 4 alongside the campaign and Multiplayer, and it launched with them on 23 October. Digital pre-order owners could play it from 20 October through early access (our release time and editions guide covers who got what). It is a PvPvE mode: AI enemies, other squads and solo players share the same server.

The map is Hajin, an exclusion zone with named areas from Hajin City and NuriGO Mall to the Haneul Nuclear Reactor. A radiation storm intensifies as the deployment goes on, which is the game's way of telling you to head for an exfil. Insider Gaming reports up to 60 players per match in squads of up to three; Infinity Ward's own guides do not give a player count.

How does a DMZ deployment work?

Every run starts at the Forward Operating Base (FOB), your menu-hub base, and you pick one of three deployment types. Story Missions are replayable narrative objectives that usually pay out high-value gear and DMZ Cash. Dynamic Operations drop you straight into an objective for DMZ Cash and XP, and each one you finish in a run calls in a Supply Drop of higher rarity than the last. Free Roam has no mission at all, which Infinity Ward recommends for looting printer ingredients or hunting Wanted players.

For Dynamic Ops and Free Roam you also choose how you arrive, and the faster options cost DMZ Cash.

To leave, find an exfil site (marked by green smoke), call in the helicopter and hold the area until it lands. Infinity Ward warns that exfil flares are loud and visible from far away, so other squads use them as ambush points. Every area also has a Threat Level from Low to Extreme shown under your compass: fight loudly and enemy reinforcements escalate, break contact and it calms down.

What do you keep and what do you lose when you die?

This is the question most new players ask, and the answer is split between what you carried and what stays at base. Infinity Ward's FOB guide separates the Stash, which never leaves the FOB, from the Loadout and Backpack you take into Hajin. Anything in the Backpack that is not in a Secure Slot is lost if you fail to exfil; Secure Slots come with upgraded Backpacks.

Everything you collect is shared: DMZ Cash, Resources and printer ingredients belong to the account, not the Operator. Infinity Ward even suggests running a loot-focused Operator to farm materials for your other builds. The Free Loadout offered before each deployment is a way to get in without risking your own gear, and you keep it if you make it out.

How do Operators, Dog Tags and Traits work?

Operators in DMZ are mostly a cosmetic choice, but each Active Duty Operator levels up separately. You start with two Active Duty slots (three with the Vault Edition) and unlock another through DMZ levels. An Operator you recruit is locked to that slot until you dismiss them.

Progress shows on the Operator's Dog Tag, which climbs 18 levels from Steel I to Onyx III. Each level grants one Trait Point, so an Operator tops out at 18. There are 66 Traits split evenly across three trees, Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist, with 22 in each; with 18 points you can max two trees or spread across all three. Trait picks are permanent for that Operator until they Prestige, which resets them.

The Dog Tag is also a trophy: a player who kills you can loot it and display it in their Dog Tag Case back at their FOB, and it shows your Bounty and player-kill count.

How does DMZ progression work?

DMZ has its own Player Level track from 1 to 70, separate from the 1–55 level used across Modern Warfare 4. The link only runs one way: DMZ XP also counts toward the 1–55 level, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP do not raise your DMZ level. DMZ XP earned in a run counts even if you never reach the helicopter.

DMZ levels unlock the base itself: new FOB stations, 3D Printer recipes, Bank capacity, Stash and weapon slots, Gunsmith discounts, Vendor stock and an extra Operator slot. The Vendor opens at DMZ Level 5. Your Stash starts at 40 items and 12 weapons. Weapon levels, by contrast, are global, so levelling a gun in Multiplayer unlocks its attachments in DMZ too, and shared attachments only unlock once.

At the end of every deployment, successful or not, the After Action Report rates you from F to S++ on Objectives, Combat and Looting. Infinity Ward's advice is to spread effort across all three rather than only looting.

How does DMZ Operator Prestige work?

Once an Operator has earned all 18 Trait Points and is not MIA, you can Prestige them. This is optional and has nothing to do with the Multiplayer Prestige covered in our Modern Warfare 4 Prestige guide. You hand over specific gear and DMZ Cash, the Operator's Traits reset, and they gain one random Permanent Prestige Trait that stays with them even if you dismiss them or change their skin.

An Operator can hold three Permanent Prestige Traits. From the fourth Prestige on, each new Trait offered can replace one of the three or be discarded. Empty your Loadout and Backpack of anything you want to keep first: the required gear is consumed.

How do Bounties, Lieutenants and Commanders work?

Kill another player and you earn a Bounty that follows your Operator across deployments; after four player kills you become Wanted, and the biggest Bounties appear on the FOB leaderboard as Most Wanted. Wanted players show up as a shrinking circle on the Tac Map for anyone who has bought intel, and at the top level for everyone. You shed a Bounty by dying, by losing your Dog Tag to a player who extracts with it, or by paying it off at a Bounty Station in Hajin. Hunters get a DMZ Cash cut for exfilling with a Bountied player's Dog Tag.

Lieutenants are named boss enemies. Intel bought at the Boss Board lasts one deployment, and Lieutenant Hunt towers mark the nearest one. Each drops a Dog Tag Case that broadcasts your position to rival squads, so Infinity Ward advises exfilling straight away. Commanders, the minigun-armed Colossus, the Deathstalker drone and a patrolling tank, are always somewhere in Hajin and cannot be tracked with bought intel.

What did the launch patch change in DMZ?

The 23 October launch patch notes list DMZ stability and disconnect fixes, a fix for Lieutenant intel purchases not updating the matching DMZ Order, and a change that lets players steal back UAV Towers from enemy control. Infinity Ward is still investigating AI cars driving without drivers or getting stuck. It also reminded players that weapons are tuned separately in Multiplayer and DMZ, with tuning changes being considered for the following week, so gun advice from Multiplayer may not carry over.

What should new DMZ players do first?

  1. Run Story Missions, Dynamic Ops and DMZ Orders: Infinity Ward names them as the best sources of XP and gear, and your Orders can sometimes be completed during a mission at the same time.
  2. Use the Free Loadout while your Stash is thin, and always carry a Plate Carrier, a Backpack, a weapon and a Medkit, the kit Infinity Ward recommends.
  3. Put your most valuable item in a Secure Slot once you have a Backpack that offers one.
  4. Stay quiet in high-threat areas: melee, throwing knives and suppressed shots avoid escalating the AI response.
  5. Offload loot to the Stash after every exfil, and treat exfil sites as the most dangerous place on the map.

FAQ

Can you play Modern Warfare 4 DMZ solo?

Yes. Infinity Ward says you can deploy alone or in a squad, and a Stealth Meter helps solo players avoid AI detection. Insider Gaming reports squads of up to three and a Squad Fill toggle you can switch off so random players are not added.

How many players are in a DMZ match?

Insider Gaming reports up to 60 players per match, split into squads of up to three. Infinity Ward's own guides describe other squads and solo players sharing Hajin but do not give a number, and matchmaking may fill fewer slots.

Do you lose everything when you die in DMZ?

No. You lose the Loadout and Backpack you carried, except items in Secure Slots, and your Operator goes MIA. Your Stash, banked DMZ Cash and the DMZ XP earned in that deployment are kept.

Does DMZ XP count toward my Multiplayer level?

Yes, one way. DMZ XP counts toward the main 1–55 Player Progression, but XP from Multiplayer or Warzone does not raise your 1–70 DMZ level. Weapon levels are shared across Multiplayer and DMZ.

Is DMZ Operator Prestige the same as Multiplayer Prestige?

No. Infinity Ward says DMZ Operator Prestige is tied to one Operator and is separate from the 1–55 level track, the 1–70 DMZ track and the other Modern Warfare 4 Prestige systems. It costs gear and 200,000 to 500,000 DMZ Cash.
