Great
Verdict
A faithful, smartly modernised rebuild of the PS2 favourite: an easy buy for Dynasty Warriors fans and anyone after one-versus-a-thousand nostalgia. If repetitive hack-and-slash has never clicked for you, the optional dodge and rewind will not change that.
What works
- Faithful Unreal Engine 5 rebuild of the 2001 original, praised by Push Square and TheSixthAxis
- Optional modern mechanics: dodge, counterattacks, Weapon Fusion and checkpoint rewinds
- Includes Xtreme Legends content and brings back offline split-screen for two players
- Steam players rate it higher than critics: 85.7% positive across 1,599 reviews
What doesn't
- Combat and large, empty battlefields feel repetitive by modern standards (Push Square, IGN Italia)
- Switch 2 version has a variable framerate and a blurry handheld image (Cubed3), plus long loading times (Nintendo World Report)
- Dated dialogue and voice acting, and FMV cutscenes that were not remastered

How we scoreEvidence-based review · scores read on 6 October 2026
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered is worth it if you loved the 2001 original or simply want an evening of mowing down armies: critics average 80 on OpenCritic, and Steam players are warmer still at 85.7% positive. If repetitive combat has always kept you away from the series, this faithful rebuild will not change your mind.
This is a synthesis, not a hands-on review: AFK Journal has not played the game. Our 8.2 combines the OpenCritic Top Critic Average (70%) with the share of positive Steam reviews (30%), both read on the morning of 6 October 2026, and draws on full reviews from Push Square, IGN Italia, TheSixthAxis, Nintendo World Report, Cubed3 and Steam Deck HQ, plus Koei Tecmo's own announcement.
What is Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered?
It is Omega Force's rebuild of the PlayStation 2 game that helped build the series' following in the West. Koei Tecmo dated it for 1 October 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam; the version for the original Switch was dropped, as Gematsu reported in June. Steam lists it at $39.99, with a 30 September date in US time zones.
The package folds in the Xtreme Legends content and brings back offline split-screen for two players in the Musou, Free and Versus modes. Push Square describes it as a borderline remake: Unreal Engine 5 visuals on top of the original's structure and mechanics, down to the animations. The Digital Deluxe Edition adds 42 weapons, 42 retro costumes and an officer concept art collection.

What changed from the 2001 original, and what didn't?
TheSixthAxis explains why this game was chosen: the first Dynasty Warriors was a 3D fighting game, the second introduced the musou formula, and the third refined it (in Japan it is Shin Sangoku Musou 2). The remaster keeps that design. Nintendo World Report describes battles against 30 to 50 enemies at a time, generals with telegraphed special moves, and a corner map that tracks allied and enemy units in blue and red.
What is new sits around that core. According to TheSixthAxis, Weapon Fusion lets you recycle old weapons into new ones, and the ability to quit mid-stage and retry from checkpoints makes the Chaos difficulty more approachable. Push Square notes that Koei Tecmo has never officially called it a remake, because the structure, mechanics and animations are the originals.
What critics agree on
It is a careful, faithful rebuild. Push Square says the classic stages and characters stay true to their original designs despite the new polygons. TheSixthAxis (8/10) calls it a remaster done right among many nostalgia cash-ins, and Steam Deck HQ singles out character designs that feel close to the originals but "gorgeously updated".
The modern additions help, and you can switch them off. Push Square credits the directional dodge and counterattacks with adding dynamism, and notes that purists can toggle them off in the options. TheSixthAxis highlights Weapon Fusion, which transfers effects from old weapons to new ones, plus mid-stage saving and a rewind that lets you retry from checkpoints. IGN Italia likes the Xtreme Legends additions for customising your officer and bodyguards, and the improved equipment system.
Underneath, it is still a 2001 game. Push Square says the huge, often empty battlefields are still a chore to cross and that repeating the same three combos is a big ask in 2026. IGN Italia finds the controls less responsive than you would expect, even with the new dodge. Nintendo World Report (8.5) calls it a pretty good game with occasional frustration and slightly anachronistic design, and argues that is part of why it works.
Where critics split
The disagreement is about who the game is for, not whether it is well made. TheSixthAxis praises the care taken for old fans and newcomers alike, and Cubed3 (8/10) credits Koei Tecmo for not tinkering with what fans wanted; Push Square (7/10) recommends it easily to diehards but finds it a slog at times; IGN Italia (6.5) doubts how well it suits a modern audience. Even the audio splits opinion: TheSixthAxis ranks the hair metal soundtrack among gaming's best, while IGN Italia calls the sound only just above passable.

The aggregates differ too. Metacritic shows a Metascore of 72 from 10 reviews, eight points below OpenCritic's Top Critic Average of 80. The samples are small and only partly overlap, so we treat the gap as noise rather than a verdict.
What do Steam players say?
Players like it more than critics do. Steam shows 1,370 positive reviews out of 1,599 (85.7%, Very Positive), and 3,268 people were playing at around 09:10 UTC on 6 October. Steam already filters off-topic review bombs out of its score, so these figures reflect reviews about the game itself.

| All languages | 1,370 | 1,599 | 85.7% |
| English | 694 | 748 | 92.8% |
| Simplified Chinese | 334 | 450 | 74.2% |
| Japanese | 74 | 106 | 69.8% |
| All other languages | 268 | 295 | 90.8% |
In the 100 most recent positive English reviews, nostalgia comes up in 34, the music in 28 and the new visuals in 22. The 38 most recent negative English reviews mostly call the game dated or repetitive (12), followed by performance or framerate complaints (8) and pop-in (5); four dislike the new mechanics. Japanese reviews are the outlier at 69.8%, and the sample of 106 is too small to say why.
The r/dynastywarriors subreddit shows the same mood. In the first week, a post calling the remaster amazing reached 141 upvotes and a side-by-side of the Changban stage in the original and the remaster reached 212, while a thread arguing that the game feels like a "twisted remake" drew 25 comments but no net upvotes (figures read on 6 October 2026).
How does it run on PC, Steam Deck and Switch 2?
On PC, Steam's minimum specification is Windows 11 with an Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X, 16GB of RAM and a 6GB GeForce GTX 1060 or Radeon RX 5600 XT. IGN Italia tested it on its main PC and on a Steam Machine, where it left every graphics setting at maximum without problems. Steam Deck HQ calls it a fantastic way to play classic Warriors on the Deck and publishes a tuned preset (medium textures, low shadows and foliage).
Switch 2 is the weakest version on the evidence so far. Cubed3 reports a highly variable framerate and blurry resolution and textures, particularly undocked. Nintendo World Report found loading times excessive and the expected handheld drop in fidelity, though without wild swings, and notes that the FMV cutscenes were not remastered. No outlet we read flagged problems on PS5.

How we got to 8.2
Our formula weights critics at 70% and Steam players at 30%. We considered a correction for the Switch 2 performance problems but did not apply one: only Cubed3 documents the framerate issue, and our rules require two independent sources.

Should you buy it?
Yes, if you played the original or want a musou game you can share on one screen: the reviews we read broadly recommend it to fans. Try first if you are new: a free demo is listed on Steam, and the repetition critics describe is the whole game, not a phase. Skip it on Switch 2 if image quality matters and you own another platform.
