GTA 6 Age Ratings: ESRB M, PEGI 18 and an Australian R18+ That Lists Sex Scenes

GTA 6 is rated M by the ESRB, PEGI 18 in the UK and R18+ in Australia, where the label lists sex scenes. Every descriptor, compared with GTA 5.

Grand Theft Auto VI now has its age ratings. The ESRB has rated it M (Mature 17+), as shown on Rockstar's official GTA VI site, and the PlayStation Store lists PEGI 18 in the UK, R18 in New Zealand and R 18+ in Australia, where the descriptors include "Sex Scenes". Germany's USK rating is still pending.

This piece is built from the rating panels on Rockstar's site and on five regional PlayStation Store pages for the standard edition, read on 2 October 2026 between 06:30 and 06:45 UTC, plus the ESRB's own database. IGN first reported the ESRB rating and the Australian wording on 1 October. What we add is the side-by-side comparison with GTA 5's labels, which changes how much the "sex scenes" headline actually tells you.

What ratings has GTA 6 received?

Four boards have finished their ratings, and all four limit GTA 6 to players aged 17 or 18 and over. The descriptors differ because each board uses its own vocabulary, not necessarily because they saw different content.

How does it compare with GTA 5's rating?

In the US, it is a carbon copy. GTA 5's ESRB entry for the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series versions lists the same seven content descriptors, word for word. The one difference is in the interactive elements: GTA 5 carries Users Interact and In-Game Purchases, GTA 6 only In-Game Purchases. Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6.

Australia is where the wording moved. GTA 5's Australian listing says "Sex", "High Impact Themes", "Violence" and "Online Interactivity"; GTA 6's says "Sex Scenes" and "High Impact Violence", with no online line. The missing online notice matches the ESRB's dropped Users Interact.

Does "Sex Scenes" mean GTA 6 is more explicit than GTA 5?

The labels alone cannot settle it. GTA 5 was hardly chaste: its ESRB summary describes implied sex acts and encounters the player pays for, with sound but no nudity in those sequences, and nudity elsewhere, such as a topless lap dance in a strip club. Australia's board summed that up as "Sex".

IGN, which spotted the new wording, says it is unclear whether the boards have changed their language since GTA 5's original release or whether GTA 6 has more scripted, film-style scenes. IGN also points out that trailers have shown intimate moments between Jason and Lucia, but nobody outside Rockstar and the boards has seen the full content yet.

What we don't know yet

  • The ESRB's detailed rating summary. A search of the ESRB database for "Grand Theft Auto VI" and "Grand Theft Auto 6" returned nothing at 06:40 UTC on 2 October. GTA 5's summary runs to several hundred words and names specific scenes, so it is the document to watch.
  • Germany's rating. The German PlayStation Store shows "USK Rating Pending"; GTA 5 is USK 18 there.
  • What In-Game Purchases covers. The PlayStation Store already sells a "Grand Theft Auto VI: Ultimate Edition Upgrade"; Rockstar has not detailed any other paid content.

What it means for players

Nothing changes for pre-orders or the date: Rockstar's site still says 19 November 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Parents deciding whether GTA 6 belongs in the house should wait for the ESRB summary, which will be more specific than any of the labels above. For what the game actually contains beyond the ratings, our breakdown of what Game Informer revealed about GTA 6's map, weather and wildlife collects the confirmed details, and the GTA VI hub lists everything else we have covered.
