Rockstar plans to release Grand Theft Auto VI on PC in the first quarter of 2027, GamesBeat reported on 13 October, citing four industry sources familiar with the studio's plans who asked not to be named. Rockstar did not respond to GamesBeat's request for comment, so this is a report, not an announcement.
This piece is built on the GamesBeat report, the coverage that followed in VGC, Eurogamer and PC Gamer, Rockstar's official GTA VI page, release dates from IGDB and Steam, and Steam's public player counts, all checked on 14 October 2026. The console version is unaffected: it is still due on Thursday 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What does the GamesBeat report say?
The claim is narrow: a PC release within the first three months of 2027. GamesBeat gives no day, no store list and no details on what the PC version will include. It frames the timing around money and online play: PC players are a large audience Rockstar has every reason to reach quickly, and user-made content such as role-playing servers needs a PC version. Rockstar bought Cfx.re, the team behind the GTA 5 role-playing mod FiveM, in August 2023.
The same article points to comments by Twitch chief executive Dan Clancy, who told Bloomberg at Tokyo Game Show that GTA VI's online mode launches "next year". Eurogamer and VGC both carried the report with the same caveat: Rockstar has confirmed nothing. VGC also recalled that former Rockstar producer John Ricchio has described the studio's console-first habit as resource management rather than a stance against PC.
How fast would that be compared with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2?
Very fast, by Rockstar's standards. We counted the days between each game's first console release and its PC release, using the North American dates listed by IGDB. A Q1 2027 launch for GTA VI would land somewhere between 43 and 132 days after the consoles, shorter than any of the three games below.
| Game | First console release | PC release | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto IV | 29 April 2008 | 2 December 2008 | 217 days (about 7 months) |
| Grand Theft Auto V | 17 September 2013 | 13 April 2015 | 573 days (about 19 months) |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 26 October 2018 | 5 November 2019 | 375 days (just over a year) |
| Grand Theft Auto VI | 19 November 2026 | Q1 2027 (reported, unconfirmed) | 43 to 132 days |
Red Dead Redemption 2 first reached PC through the Rockstar Games Launcher and the Epic Games Store; its Steam page lists 5 December 2019, a month later. The original Red Dead Redemption is left out on purpose: it skipped PC entirely until 2024.
Why would Rockstar move faster this time?
Steam's own numbers show how much PC audience Rockstar's older games still hold. At 06:38 UTC on 14 October, Steam's API counted 30,024 people playing GTA V Enhanced and 26,646 playing GTA V Legacy, 56,670 between the two versions of a game that is 13 years old. Red Dead Redemption 2 had 20,222. In Steam's weekly most-played chart for the week to 12 October, GTA V Legacy ranked 10th, GTA V Enhanced 33rd and Red Dead Redemption 2 42nd.
| Game | Players now | Weekly chart rank |
|---|---|---|
| Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced | 30,024 | 33 |
| Grand Theft Auto V Legacy | 26,646 | 10 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | 20,222 | 42 |
There is a counter-argument. PC Gamer points out that an announced PC date only weeks after launch could persuade some players to skip the console version and wait, eating into launch sales, and says it would not bet on the report yet. Rockstar's history of long gaps is the best evidence against it.
What we don't know yet
Almost everything that matters to a PC player: an exact date, the stores (Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, Epic), the price, the PC system requirements, and whether the online mode will launch alongside it. PC Gamer notes that Take-Two's next quarterly results are due on 9 November, ten days before launch, which would be one natural moment for an announcement. Until then, nothing is official.
What should PC players do now?
Don't count on a shortcut on day one. Xbox has already said the game will not stream to PC through Xbox Cloud Gaming at launch, as we covered in our report on the cloud streaming story. If you only play on PC, the choice is the same as it was yesterday: buy a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for 19 November, or wait for an official PC announcement and requirements before planning an upgrade.

When is the GTA 6 PC release date?

GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 on 17 September 2013 and reached PC in April 2015, roughly 19 months later. Red Dead Redemption 2 took just over a year, and GTA 4 about seven months.
