Slay the Spire 2 Character Tier List: Win Rates vs Top Players

The Silent wins most often in tracked Slay the Spire 2 runs, yet experienced A10 players rate the Defect strongest. Our tier list puts the data and the opinions side by side.

The best Slay the Spire 2 character for most players is the Silent: it is first or second for win rate in both public run trackers we checked. Experienced players chasing Ascension 10 disagree, and the most-upvoted view in a September r/slaythespire thread puts the Defect at the top, even though the Defect has the lowest tracked win rate of the five.

Mega Crit publishes no official character ranking, so this tier list is a reading of other people's data and opinions, not of our own runs. It is checked against main-branch Major Update #2 (v0.107.1, 19 June 2026) and the latest beta patch, v0.111.0 (14 August 2026); no newer patch had shipped when we checked on 3 October 2026.

Slay the Spire 2 character tier list at a glance

We give each character two tiers, because the evidence points two ways. "Most players" follows the average win-rate rank across the two trackers below. "A10 climbers" follows what experienced players say about beating the highest Ascension level, where skill matters more than the starter deck.

AFK Journal tier list, built from MetaBot and BrokenBuilds win rates and the r/slaythespire A10 thread of 1 September 2026 (checked 3 October 2026)
CharacterMost playersA10 climbersWhy
The SilentSA1st and 2nd in the two trackers; one A10 player says Aeonglass and the reworked Infested Prism hurt her
The RegentAATop win rate on MetaBot, 4th on BrokenBuilds; strong tools but high variance
The NecrobinderABMid-table in both trackers; the character most often called hardest at A10
The IroncladBB4th and 3rd in the trackers; several players found it easiest at A10, few call it the strongest
The DefectBSLast in both trackers, but the most-upvoted A10 opinion calls it the strongest

What do the win-rate trackers say?

Two sites publish character win rates. MetaBot tracks runs from players who use its desktop app and does not state its sample size or patch on the page. BrokenBuilds says its figures come from a community aggregate of roughly 23,000 runs up to 16 June 2026, on patch 0.107.1. The absolute numbers are very different, which suggests the two samples cover different Ascension levels and players, so compare the order rather than the percentages.

The Necrobinder6613.6%332.1%2
The Ironclad8012.8%431.7%3
The Defect7512.5%529.8%5

Two things hold in both data sets. The Silent is near the top and the Defect is last. Everything else moves: the Regent is first on MetaBot and fourth on BrokenBuilds, which fits players' description of him as a high-variance character. The spread is also narrow, 2.9 percentage points on MetaBot and 5.8 on BrokenBuilds, so no character is a trap.

What do experienced A10 players say?

The clearest recent discussion is a 1 September 2026 r/slaythespire thread asking players to rank the five characters by how hard it is to beat Ascension 10 (56 comments when we read it). Its most-upvoted reply, at 38 points, says top players broadly agree the Defect is the strongest character, with the Regent around second alongside the Silent. A reply under it pushed back that strongest does not mean easiest, adding that its author had heard the claim mainly from the hosts of the Spirecast podcast.

Other replies are less tidy, but two patterns repeat. Several players name the Necrobinder as the hardest character at A10, pointing at the Aeonglass boss and the reworked Infested Prism fight. Several others say the Ironclad was the easiest to beat A10 with, sometimes within a few attempts, while few call it the strongest. Individual rankings in the thread contradict each other, which is a reminder that personal fit matters at this level.

Why does the Defect rank last on data but first for top players?

Nobody has measured this directly, so treat this as our reading. Win-rate trackers average every run, from first-time players to A10 regulars. The Defect's orb system (channel, evoke, Focus) asks more planning per turn than the Ironclad's or the Silent's, so a character with a high ceiling can still post the lowest average. One reply in the thread describes the opposite experience: practically every Defect card is good, which keeps decks functional even without a synergy.

The beta patches have pulled the Defect in both directions: v0.111.0 buffed Thunder (damage 6 to 8) and reworked Hyperbeam so its Focus loss lasts only one turn, but cut Null's Weak and Synchronize's Focus. If you already win regularly, the Defect is the pick the strongest players argue for. If you are still learning, its average win rate says to start elsewhere.

The Silent: the safest pick for most players

The Silent is the only character in the top two of both trackers, which is why it gets our S for most players. It starts with 70 HP and plays around Poison, Shivs and discard (Sly) effects. An analysis of 1.1 million runs by Gamer Of Passion also found the Silent has the widest gap between good and bad card picks, so the floor depends on drafting.

The A10 picture is weaker. One experienced player in the thread said she was the easiest character before Aeonglass and the reworked Infested Prism arrived, and is now "just really good" according to another. Beta v0.111.0 also removed the extra damage from Blade of Ink's Inky enchantment and made Mirage Exhaust, so expect her numbers on the beta branch to dip.

The Regent: strong tools, high variance

The Regent is new to the series. He starts with 75 HP, spends Stars as a second resource next to Energy, and has Forge cards in his pool. He has the highest win rate on MetaBot (15.4%) and is fourth on BrokenBuilds, and one A10 player in the thread describes him as a character with more easy wins and more hard losses.

The beta patches mostly help him: v0.111.0 cut Alignment's Star cost from 3 to 2 and Guiding Star's from 2 to 1, and raised Spoils of Battle's Forge. The trade-off is defence, as the Regalite relic dropped from 6 to 4 Block. An A grade in both columns reflects that he is never a bad choice, but rarely the obvious one.

The Necrobinder: great start, hardest at A10

The Necrobinder has the lowest starting HP in the cast (66) and fights alongside Osty, a summoned companion who can take hits for her, while Doom-based cards finish enemies off. She is third on MetaBot and second on BrokenBuilds, which earns an A for most players.

At A10 she drops to B. Players in the thread praise her starter deck but say much of her card pool is hard to use, and several blame Aeonglass, which punishes slow defensive decks, for making her the toughest character to win with. The recent beta buffs are small: Sacrifice now gives triple Osty's Max HP as Block, Shroud gains 3 Block instead of 2, and The Scythe scales faster.

The Ironclad: forgiving, but rarely the strongest

The Ironclad is the character everyone starts with. He has the most HP (80), heals 6 HP after each combat through his Burning Blood relic, and scales with Strength and Exhaust. Both trackers put him in the bottom half (fourth and third), yet several players in the A10 thread found him the easiest character to win with.

That gap usually comes down to drafting habits from the first game. The Gamer Of Passion data puts Feel No Pain among the Ironclad's costliest Act 1 picks (about -5.9%), while Battle Trance and Uppercut are among the best. The beta patches buffed Demon Form (3 Strength instead of 2), Rampage and Mangle, which should help his late game.

What changed in the latest patches?

Major Update #2 brought four beta patches to the main branch in June. It replaced the Act 3 boss Doormaker with Aeonglass, reworked the Infested Prism enemy and replaced the game's random number generator after players found correlated outcomes. Since then the beta branch has had four more patches, up to v0.111.0. In its August newsletter Mega Crit said updates would come further apart while it works on an alternate Act 2 and a new character.

Selected character changes on the beta branch, v0.108.0 to v0.111.0 (Mega Crit patch notes on Steam, 3 July to 14 August 2026)
CharacterMain buffsMain nerfs or changes
The IroncladDemon Form 3(4) Strength; Rampage, Mangle, Setup Strike, Howl From Beyond damage upColossus and Crimson Mantle Block down; Expect a Fight reworked into a Block card
The SilentAnticipate, Flick-Flack; Haze cheaper (3 to 2 Energy)Blade of Ink loses bonus damage; Mirage Exhausts; Tracking 50% instead of double; Well-Laid Plans costs more; Outbreak reworked into a Rare Skill
The DefectThunder 8(11); Biased Cognition, Refract, Momentum StrikeHyperbeam reworked; Null and Synchronize cut; Compact's Fuel no longer draws
The RegentAlignment, Guiding Star, Resonance cheaper; Devastate 35(45); Spoils of Battle Forge upRegalite and Pillar of Creation reworked to less Block; Refine Blade Forge down
The NecrobinderSacrifice triple Osty Max HP; Shroud, Reave, Soulstorm, Haunt, The Scythe up; Time's Up no longer ExhaustsEidolon reworked and no longer generated mid-combat

None of these changes is large enough to reorder the list on its own, and beta changes reach main-branch players only with the next Major Update. Neither tracker says whether it separates main and beta runs, which is one more reason to read the tiers as broad bands.

Which character should you actually pick?

  • First runs: the Ironclad. You have no choice at the start, and his HP and healing make mistakes cheaper.
  • Climbing Ascension: the Silent, the most consistent character in the data.
  • Already beating A10: the Defect, the character experienced players most often call strongest.
  • Looking for variety: the Regent, whose Star economy plays unlike anything in the first game.
  • Looking for a challenge: the Necrobinder at A10.

FAQ

Who is the best character in Slay the Spire 2?

It depends on your level. The Silent is first or second for win rate in both MetaBot and BrokenBuilds, so it is the best pick for most players. Experienced A10 players on r/slaythespire most often name the Defect as the strongest character.

Which Slay the Spire 2 character is best for beginners?

The Ironclad is the only character available at the start and has the most HP (80) plus a 6 HP heal after each combat. Once you unlock the Silent, it is the most consistent character in the win-rate data.

Is the Defect bad in Slay the Spire 2?

No. It has the lowest win rate in both trackers we checked, but the gaps are small, and the most-upvoted reply in a September r/slaythespire A10 thread calls it the strongest character in the game. It rewards experience more than the others.

Which character is hardest to beat Ascension 10 with?

In the r/slaythespire thread of 1 September 2026, the Necrobinder was named hardest most often, with players blaming the Aeonglass boss and the reworked Infested Prism fight. Individual rankings varied widely.

How do you unlock every character in Slay the Spire 2?

The Ironclad is available from the start. Playing a run unlocks the next character in order: the Ironclad unlocks the Silent, the Silent unlocks the Regent, the Regent unlocks the Necrobinder, and the Necrobinder unlocks the Defect.
