Wilderness Bound is Minecraft's third game drop of 2026, and it is about camping: a new Dappled Forest biome, Abandoned Camps in 18 biomes, single-use Straw Beds and Cushions you can sit on. Mojang released it on 15 September 2026 as a free update for both Minecraft: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
This guide is built on Mojang's official patch notes for Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, plus the two Bedrock hotfixes released since. Checked against Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.52 on 4 October 2026. Where the two editions' notes differ, we say so.

There are no new hostile mobs in this drop. The passive mobs in the Dappled Forest are existing ones (sheep, chickens, cows, pigs, rabbits and foxes), using their cold variants where those exist. If you were hoping for a big combat update, Wilderness Bound is not it: it is a building, exploration and quality-of-life drop.
Where is the Dappled Forest, and what grows there?
The Java 26.3 notes describe the Dappled Forest as a new forest biome found near cold biomes, so the search starts at the edge of taigas and snowy areas. You will recognise it by its Poplar trees, which come in red, orange and yellow, each with falling-leaf particles in its own colour. Fallen Poplar trees also generate there, along with patches of Red Shrubs and Leaf Litter.
Poplar Leaves drop saplings that grow into a random colour variant, so you cannot pick the colour of a tree you plant. Poplar Logs craft into a full new wood set. Shelf Mushrooms grow on standing and fallen Poplars in two sizes: Bone Meal turns a small one into a large one, which drops two items when broken. They work like other mushrooms in stews and have a slight bounce when you step on them, similar to a bed.
What are Abandoned Camps, and what is inside them?
Abandoned Camps are the drop's new structure, and they are widespread: they can generate in 18 biomes, from Meadows and Cherry Groves to Swamps, Savannas, Wooded Badlands and the Pale Garden. Each biome has its own design, with some pieces shared by every variant. Their chests and barrels hold loot.
The most useful loot is maps. On Java, camp chests can contain Explorer Maps to other Abandoned Camps in eight biomes and to seven structures: Ancient City, Trial Chambers, Mineshaft, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid, Warm Ocean Ruins and Woodland Mansion. The Bedrock 26.50 changelog lists maps to Ancient Cities, Mineshafts, Desert Pyramids, Warm Ocean Ruins and other camp variants, and adds that Straw Beds and Cushions can be found in camps. Mojang has not published loot odds for either edition.
How do Straw Beds work, and do they set your spawn?
Straw Beds are the drop's most practical addition. They let you sleep through the night without setting your spawn point, so you can skip the dark on a long expedition and still respawn at home. The catch is that each one breaks after a single use.
Three Hay Bales craft four Straw Beds, so a stack of wheat goes a long way. They cannot be used in the Nether or the End: try it and the Straw Bed is destroyed. On Bedrock, a Hoe breaks them faster. Java also tracks how many times you have slept in one in the Statistics screen.
How do you craft Cushions and the new Stairs and Slabs?
Every colour of Wool and Concrete now has Stair and Slab versions, which means 64 new blocks across the two families. Concrete Stairs and Slabs can also be made at the Stonecutter. Wool Stairs and Slabs dampen vibrations like other Wool blocks, which matters near Sculk Sensors and Wardens.
Three Wool Slabs of the same colour make a Cushion, in 16 colours. You can place it on any flat surface and sit on it. Cushions snap to the grid horizontally but rest on top of whatever is under them, have no collision, can overlap other objects except other Cushions, and break if the supporting block is removed. Pistons cannot move them.

What changed with Explorer Maps?
On Java, Explorer Maps are now items of their own rather than renamed Filled Maps, each with its own icon, from the Ocean Monument Map to the new Abandoned Camp Map. Several were renamed for consistency: the Trial Chambers Explorer Map is now the Buried Trial Chambers Map, for example. Maps in old worlds convert automatically when the world loads.
There is one loss: Explorer Maps and Buried Treasure Maps can no longer be zoomed out, at the Crafting Table or the Cartography Table. You can still clone them. Bedrock's notes only mention new icons for Explorer Maps. On both editions, the player marker on maps now shows which way you are facing.
Java vs Bedrock: what is different in Wilderness Bound?
| Topic | Java Edition 26.3 | Bedrock Edition 26.50 |
|---|---|---|
| Maps in Abandoned Camps | Other camps (8 biomes) plus Ancient City, Trial Chambers, Mineshaft, Desert Pyramid, Jungle Pyramid, Warm Ocean Ruins, Woodland Mansion | Ancient City, Mineshaft, Desert Pyramid, Warm Ocean Ruins and other camps |
| Straw Beds and Cushions in camps | Not mentioned | Yes |
| Explorer Maps | Own items, renamed, no zooming out | New icons |
| Straw Bed with a Hoe | Not mentioned | Breaks faster |
| Other notable changes | Realms Invite Codes, spectators can use portals, borderless fullscreen by default | Bats in every Overworld biome except the Deep Dark |
| Hotfixes since launch | None as of 4 October | 26.51 (15 September), 26.52 (25 September) |
Which smaller changes are worth knowing?
- Stews: on Java, the Mushroom Stew and Suspicious Stew recipes now accept any two mushrooms, Shelf Mushrooms included.
- Ender Pearls: on Java, teleporting with one now resets your momentum.
- Realms: on Java, owners can create up to five Invite Codes per Realm, with optional expiry dates.
- PC controls: Java removed the Raw Input mouse setting, uses physical key positions for key bindings, defaults to borderless fullscreen and runs natively on Wayland on Linux.
- Shields: on Java, raising a Shield now takes priority over tilling or making paths when you also hold a Hoe or Shovel.
- Graphics: Java's Improved Transparency setting now uses a new order-independent transparency method, which Mojang expects to cost more performance than the old one.
What have the hotfixes fixed since launch?
Bedrock has had two. Hotfix 26.51, on launch day, fixed a crash when loading worlds with large, densely connected builds of fences, glass panes, iron bars or walls. Hotfix 26.52, on 25 September, stopped Cushions disappearing when their chunk reloaded and fixed older worlds with Marketplace add-ons having achievements disabled from 26.50 onwards. Disabled achievements after the update were also reported on r/Minecraft on launch day. The 26.52 notes also mention better stability on networked Switch consoles and a launch fix for some iOS devices.
What comes after Wilderness Bound?
Java testing for 26.4 has started. Snapshot 1 (22 September) makes Vulkan the default graphics API, and Snapshot 2 (29 September) adds better render-distance fog and a redesigned F3 debug screen. Neither contains Ice Caves content yet. Ice Caves, with glowing ice crystals and a frozen zombie, is the next drop announced at Minecraft Live in September, and Mojang has not dated it.

FAQ
Does a Straw Bed set your spawn point in Minecraft?
No. According to Mojang's patch notes, a Straw Bed lets you sleep through the night without setting your spawn point. It is destroyed after one use and breaks if you try to sleep on it in the Nether or the End.
Where do you find the Dappled Forest?
Mojang's notes describe the Dappled Forest as a forest biome found near cold biomes. Look for red, orange and yellow Poplar trees, fallen Poplar logs with Shelf Mushrooms, and patches of Red Shrubs. You need to explore newly generated chunks to find it.
Is Wilderness Bound on both Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Mojang released it on 15 September 2026 as Java Edition 26.3 and Bedrock Edition 26.50, as a free update for anyone who owns either edition. A few details differ between the two versions' patch notes, such as the Explorer Maps found in camps.
How do you craft a Cushion?
Craft three Wool Slabs of the same colour into a Cushion. There are 16 colours. Cushions sit on any flat surface, have no collision, and break if the block underneath is removed. On Bedrock they can also be found in Abandoned Camps.
Why were my Bedrock achievements disabled after Wilderness Bound?
Bedrock hotfix 26.52 on 25 September fixed a bug where older worlds with Marketplace add-ons had achievements disabled from version 26.50 onwards. Update the game to 26.52 or later; the patch notes do not say whether already affected worlds are restored.
