Minecraft is the best-selling video game ever made, and the least interested in telling you what to do with it. A world of one-metre blocks generates around you; you punch a tree, you make a bench, and from there the game supplies materials and hostile nights rather than objectives. There is a defined ending — travel to the End dimension and kill the ender dragon — but Mojang has always treated it as optional, and most of the game's cultural weight sits somewhere else entirely: in redstone circuits, in servers, in classrooms, in the long archive of things people built because nothing stopped them.

It ships in two main forms. Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS and Linux and carries the deep modding ecosystem. Bedrock Edition runs on consoles, phones and Windows, and is the one with cross-platform play and a paid Marketplace.

The update model changed shape in the mid-2020s. The old rhythm of one big named update a year — Caves & Cliffs, The Wild Update, Trails & Tales — gave way to smaller “game drops” arriving several times a year, alongside a shift to year-based version numbering. The free-update promise itself has not changed.
