Helldivers 2 patch 7.2.0 is a buff patch: it makes the Halo and Killzone collaboration weapons, both Sickles, the light-penetration shotguns and five stratagems stronger, and nerfs only Eagle Airstrike gas. It also turns the Bile bug spawns into a proper strain and ships a long list of crash and performance fixes, according to the official 7.2.0 patch notes Arrowhead posted on Steam on 20 October 2026.

This guide is built only on those patch notes and Arrowhead's other Steam posts from the same week; every old and new value below is copied from the notes, and the percentages are our arithmetic. Checked against patch 7.2.0, 22 October 2026. Nothing here comes from hands-on testing, so where the notes give no number (mission balancing, for example), neither do we.

What is in Helldivers 2 patch 7.2.0?

The patch landed on the same day as the PC anti-cheat change, which we covered in our news on the move from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat. Arrowhead groups the balance changes under three headings it calls community feedback: the legendary Warbond weapons, the Sickle, and "several stratagems". The table sums up the headline changes before the detail.

Players noticed. On Valve's Most Played chart read on the morning of 22 October 2026, Helldivers 2 sat at number 10 with a daily peak of 99,172 concurrent players, up from number 21 the week before. The chart does not say why, and the patch shared the week with a new Premium Warbond, so treat the timing as a coincidence worth noting rather than proof.

Which primary weapons got buffed in 7.2.0?

Four groups of primaries changed. Arrowhead's reasoning for the collaboration guns is simple: legendary Warbond weapons cannot be customised in the Armory, so they felt weaker than similar weapons that can take attachments. The fix is higher base stats, mostly in recoil and "durable damage", the separate damage value the game uses against tougher, durable targets.

LAS-17 Double-Edge Sickle——Spin-up 0.5 s → 0.33 s; cooling delay 1.33 s → 0.66 s

Why the Accelerator Rifle now staggers less

The PLAS-39 change looks like a nerf but is not meant as one. Arrowhead says the high stagger made the first shot knock an enemy off-line, so the second and third shots missed the weak spot. Lower stagger should make it a better precision weapon, and the faster reload makes its ammo economy less punishing without forcing a specific armour passive.

Are the light shotguns worth using again?

That is the stated goal. Arrowhead admits the light-penetration pellet shotguns had fallen behind medium-penetration and status-effect shotguns, and gave the Punisher, Breaker and Spray&Pray a flat 20% damage increase so they kill faster. The Bushwhacker sidearm got the same treatment. None of them gained armour penetration, so they still will not punch through medium armour.

What changed for stratagems?

Five stratagem weapons or strikes got stronger and one got weaker. The pattern is about usability rather than raw damage: you can move sooner after firing the Maxigun, call the Airburst more often and carry more Breaching Hammer charges.

Stratagem changes in patch 7.2.0, old → new (source: Arrowhead 7.2.0 patch notes, 20 October 2026; checked 22 October 2026)
StratagemChangeArrowhead's reason
M-1000 MaxigunMovement control after firing 0.5 s → 0 s; stagger force 15 → 20; stagger impulse 12 → 24Hard to dodge while firing; corpses blocked targets
CQC-20 Breaching HammerSpare charges 7 → 10Could not be used as often as similar close-range anti-tank weapons
Orbital Airburst StrikeCooldown 100 → 90; explosion cone 35 → 27Steeper approach angle spread the shrapnel too wide
EXO-51 Lumberer ExosuitFlame particle damage 3 → 8Flames did not feel like other flamethrowers
A/FLAM-40 Flame SentryFlame particle damage 3 → 8Same as the Lumberer
Eagle Airstrike (gas)Demolition strength 50 → 40 (nerf)Could destroy structures like an Orbital, which was unintended

The Airburst change is a fix for a side effect: Arrowhead says Super Destroyers now sit in a different position during missions, so the shell arrived at a steeper angle and scattered its shrapnel. A narrower 27-degree cone should saturate the target area instead, and the shorter cooldown compensates for the strike's randomness.

What is the new Bile bug strain?

Before 7.2.0, the Terminid variant that spawns Bile Warriors, Spewers and Scavengers could switch on randomly in any bug mission. It is now a separate strain, like Rupture or Spore Burst, that the Game Masters turn on deliberately and that gets its own marker on the war map. In practice you should know before you drop whether a planet has Bile bugs. If you are new to how the Game Masters steer the war, our Major Orders and liberation explainer covers the basics.

Enemy fixes in the same patch are worth knowing too. The Crescent Overseer's backpack can now be destroyed, which kills it. The Hive Lord leaves combat earlier if nobody damages it for a while, Hulk Scorchers no longer stagger themselves with their own saw, and Watchers no longer spawn in huge numbers when Illuminate fleets are mixed.

Does patch 7.2.0 fix crashes and performance?

Arrowhead lists improved multithreading for smoother frame pacing, "particularly on lower core-count CPUs and Xbox Series S", less stutter in heavy combat from reworked particle processing, more responsive level loading and, on PC, less hitching from shader compilation. The notes give no frame-rate figures, so how much difference this makes on a given machine is not documented.

The crash list is long. The fixes that touch the most players are crashes when changing resolution or render scale, crashes or grey screens with upscalers at certain resolutions, a ragdoll crash and "improved DirectX 12 stability". On the visual side, Dynamic Resolution Scaling now checks whether the GPU is the bottleneck before lowering resolution, and the colour grading that was missing with DLSS or FSR enabled is back.

Which advice is now out of date?

  • "Skip the Sickle, it is too slow to start." The spin-up is now a third shorter and the cooling delay is halved.
  • "The Punisher and Breaker are outclassed." Both now hit 20% harder per shot; whether that is enough is for the community to settle over the coming weeks.
  • "Use gas Eagles to clear structures." No longer possible beyond what other Eagle bombs can destroy.
  • "Bile bugs can show up anywhere." They are now a visible, Game Master-controlled strain.
  • "Your support weapon's fire mode resets every time." Settings such as fire mode now persist between uses and across sessions.

What about Easy Anti-Cheat and mods?

Patch 7.2.0 is the update that installed Easy Anti-Cheat, with "additional security tools" on top, replacing GameGuard. Arrowhead explained the reasons in its anti-cheat post on Steam. Neither post lists which cosmetic mods still work, and threads on r/Helldivers asking exactly that have no official answer, so we will not guess: if the game refuses to start after the patch, removing mods is the first thing to try.

The patch arrived the same week as the Scope of Authority Premium Warbond. If you are deciding whether to spend Super Credits on it, our Warbonds and Super Credits guide explains what Warbonds cost and how Super Credits and tokens work. Everything else we have published on the game lives on the Helldivers 2 hub, and this guide will be updated when Arrowhead ships the next balance patch.

FAQ

When did Helldivers 2 patch 7.2.0 come out?

Arrowhead published the 7.2.0 patch notes on Steam on 20 October 2026, the same day the game switched from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat on PC.

Did patch 7.2.0 buff the Sickle?

Yes. Both the LAS-16 Sickle and LAS-17 Double-Edge Sickle start firing after 0.33 seconds instead of 0.5 and start cooling after 0.66 seconds instead of 1.33. The standard Sickle also builds less heat per shot (0.95, down from 1.15).

Was anything nerfed in patch 7.2.0?

One stratagem: Eagle Airstrike gas had its demolition strength cut from 50 to 40, so it no longer destroys structures that other Eagle bombs cannot. Arrowhead describes the old behaviour as unintended.

What is the new Bile bug strain?

The bug variant that spawns Bile Warriors, Spewers and Scavengers used to activate randomly on missions. It is now its own strain, controlled by the Game Masters and shown on the map like Rupture or Spore Burst.

Does patch 7.2.0 improve performance?

Arrowhead lists better multithreading for lower core-count CPUs and Xbox Series S, less stutter from particle effects, less shader-compilation hitching on PC and several crash fixes. It does not publish frame-rate figures.
