Best Terraria Mods in 2026: Thorium, Fargo's and More
The best Terraria mods still worth installing in 2026 — plus the version gap nobody mentions: tModLoader runs 1.4.4, not the game's current 1.4.5.

Contents
Re-checked Workshop subscriber counts, Steam figures and tModLoader's 1.4.5 status; all figures now current to 20 September 2026.
First published: the 2026 Terraria mod list, led by the tModLoader version gap.
Start with the fact that decides everything else: Terraria's desktop build is 1.4.5.8, released on 23 August 2026, and tModLoader's stable branch still targets Terraria 1.4.4. Every mod in this guide is a 1.4.4 mod. That is not a reason to skip modded Terraria — when we checked Valve's own endpoints on 20 September 2026, tModLoader had 21,570 concurrent players against the base game's 40,434, roughly 53% — but modding Terraria in 2026 means playing a slightly older Terraria. With that settled: Thorium, Fargo's Mutant Mod, Fargo's Souls Mod, Magic Storage, Recipe Browser and Boss Checklist are the ones to install first, and Calamity is still the largest mod in the ecosystem even though its development ended in August 2026.
Every figure below was checked against Steam, the Steam Workshop and tModLoader's GitHub on 20 September 2026. Subscriber counts drift; the version gap is what decides what you can install.
What is tModLoader, and do you need it?
If you want mods, you need tModLoader, and it is free. The project describes itself as “an open-source, community-driven, modification and expansion of the Terraria game” — a separate application that loads mods, not a patch applied to the copy of Terraria you already own. On Steam it appears as free DLC on the Terraria store page under app ID 1281930, developed by the TML Team, published by Re-Logic and the TML Team, and released on 16 May 2020.
It is PC-only. The Steam listing declares Windows, Mac and Linux and nothing else. If you play Terraria on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, iOS or Android, there are no mods for you — a platform limit, not a setting you have missed.
The scale is unusual for a mod loader. On 20 September 2026 its all-language Steam reviews sat at Overwhelmingly Positive, 371,476 positive of 382,480, and the Workshop catalogue listed 15,411 items. Re-Logic's 15th-anniversary post of 16 May 2026 adds 12.3 million tModLoader downloads, a past-year average of 237,000 players a day peaking at 441,000, and an average playtime of 89 hours 52 minutes — all of it on a game that has never raised its price or sold a microtransaction, an arrangement we pulled apart in Terraria vs Minecraft.
Which version of Terraria does tModLoader support in 2026?
1.4.4. The game is on 1.4.5.8. That is the whole problem in two sentences.
Terraria's 1.4.5 “Bigger and Boulder” update landed on 27 January 2026 and has been hotfixed since, reaching 1.4.5.8 on 23 August 2026. tModLoader's stable branch has not followed: its Steam listing's supported-versions field still reads 1.3.5, 1.4.3 and 1.4.4. On 6 September 2026 the team wrote, verbatim: “We are still not ready to set a release date for when the 1.4.5 version of tModLoader will become the default release, but we wish to emphasize that it is being worked on constantly.”
A 1.4.5-dev branch does exist on Steam, described by the team as mainly for contributors. The GitHub tracking issue opened on 31 March 2026 says 1.4.4 stays stable and will be kept as a legacy version alongside 1.3 and 1.4.3. For scale, the previous port to 1.4.4 took roughly nine months. Current tags are stable v2026.07.3.0 (1 September 2026) and preview v2026.08.2.1 (4 September 2026), both on the 1.4.4 base.
No date exists for tModLoader's 1.4.5 build, or for Terraria 1.4.6. Anyone printing one is guessing.
| Component | Current version | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Terraria (desktop) | 1.4.5.8, released 23 August 2026 | Terraria desktop version history |
| tModLoader (stable) | Targets Terraria 1.4.4 | tModLoader Steam listing |
| tModLoader (beta) | 1.4.5-dev, no release date | tModLoader Steam post, 6 September 2026 |
| Terraria 1.4.6 | Announced, no date | Re-Logic State of the Game, 30 August 2026 |
How to install Terraria mods (and switch branches)
- Own Terraria on Steam, then install tModLoader — it appears as free DLC on the Terraria store page.
- Launch tModLoader. It is a separate application from Terraria, with its own entry in your library.
- Use the in-game Mod Browser, which is backed by the Steam Workshop. You can also subscribe to Workshop items directly in Steam.
- To change branch, right-click tModLoader in your Steam library and open Properties → Betas, then pick Default (current stable),
1.3-legacy,1.4.3-legacy, or one of thepreview-v2026.Xbuilds. The players' guide documents each one.
Stay on Default unless you are testing for a mod developer; the legacy branches exist so old modpacks keep working.
Do Terraria mods break your saves or your achievements?
Saves: no, and tModLoader is explicit about it. The FAQ states that “tModLoader saves are kept separate from vanilla Terraria saves.” Modded characters and worlds live in \Documents\My Games\Terraria\tModLoader\, vanilla ones in the folder above. A migration tool imports a vanilla character into tModLoader; the reverse loses modded tiles and items, so treat it as one-way.
Achievements are murkier, and we will not pretend otherwise. tModLoader is a standalone Steam app with its own app ID and its own in-game achievement list that mods can extend. Players report that Steam's Terraria achievements do not unlock through it, and a third-party mod, Steam Achievement Fix, exists to re-implement them. That is community reporting, not an official position — tModLoader's FAQ does not mention achievements.
Is the Calamity Mod still worth installing?
It is still the biggest thing in the ecosystem, and it is finished. Calamity had 9,756,572 Workshop subscribers when we checked on 20 September 2026, was last updated on 9 August 2026, weighs 404 MB and has 820 dependent Workshop items hanging off it. Its own description counts 27 bosses, 200-plus enemies, four town NPCs, five biomes and over 2,400 items including 700-plus weapons, a throwing-based Rogue class and two difficulty modes above Expert — Revengeance and Death. It hard-requires a separate Calamity Mod Music mod (9,296,903 subscribers, 55 tracks).
Development ended on 10 August 2026: the team announced it had stopped, citing what GamesRadar+ quotes as a “troubled past” and an “irrecoverably tainted reputation”. The existing build stays live on the Workshop and still installs; no further content is planned.
That matters more for the add-ons than for Calamity itself. Infernum Mode (2,056,030 subscribers, updated 8 August 2026), Catalyst Mod (2,774,481, 8 August 2026) and Wrath of the Gods (2,573,666, 13 June 2026) are all live, and all three depend on a mod that is no longer being developed. None of those teams has said what that means for them, so we cannot tell you they are safe long-term bets.
Best Terraria content mods in 2026
Thorium is the one to start with, because it is both large and actively maintained: 2,318,399 subscribers, last updated 1 August 2026. Its Workshop description counts more than 2,700 items, three new classes in the Thrower, Healer and Bard, two new biomes in the Aquatic Depths and the Graveyard, 11 bosses and three mini-bosses, and 10 town NPCs. Like everything here it runs on tModLoader 1.4.4 — the official wiki's requirement line is older than the Workshop build, so trust the Workshop date.
Fargo's is two mods, and people conflate them constantly. Fargo's Mutant Mod (4,125,033 subscribers, 9 April 2026) is quality-of-life: the Mutant NPC sells boss summons drawn from many mods at once, plus infinite consumables, instant-build items and spawn-rate controls. Fargo's Souls Mod (2,368,058, 10 May 2026) is content: Enchantments and Souls accessories that stack into build-defining items, extra bosses, and the punishing Eternity Mode. The Fargo-Team GitHub organisation pushed to them on 19 September and 3 June 2026 respectively.
Three smaller picks, each checked individually. The Stars Above (1,112,547, 31 March 2026) is an 851 MB campaign mod with 259 change notes behind it. Starlight River (513,380, 31 July 2026) builds around multi-phase bosses, and its own description calls it an open alpha — take that at face value. Secrets Of The Shadows (435,250, 25 July 2026) leans on dungeon exploration, from the same core team as Catalyst.

Best Terraria quality-of-life mods
If you install nothing else, install Recipe Browser (8,347,127 subscribers, 4 September 2026) and Boss Checklist (8,218,785, 10 May 2026). The first turns “what is this ore for” into a search box; the second tells you which boss is next and what summons it — the hardest thing to work out in a heavily modded world. Both come from javidpack, with Boss Checklist co-authored by Sheepish Shepherd.
Magic Storage (7,143,347) is the other one people refuse to play without — a networked storage system that makes a wall of chests searchable from one terminal. Its Workshop item was last updated on 21 September 2025, but the GitHub repository was pushed on 18 September 2026 on the 1.4.4 branch, so it is still being developed. It needs absoluteAquarian Utilities (SerousCommonLib) alongside it.
After that: AlchemistNPC Lite (5,553,355, 27 December 2025) adds seven NPCs selling potions and materials, gated behind boss progression, with declared support for both Thorium and Calamity. Census — Town NPC Checklist (2,588,025, 2 September 2026) tells you what each NPC wants before it will move in. Shorter Respawn Time (1,549,658, 5 September 2026) and Antisocial (752,589, 15 August 2025) do what their names promise.
Three more are worth installing with their state stated plainly. Ore Excavator (4,764,868), the 1.4.3/1.4.4 Veinminer, has not been updated since 14 August 2024, and LuiAFK Reborn (2,111,403) not since 14 May 2024; both are dormant and both still work. Wing Slot Extra (3,249,347, 13 May 2025) — by Dissary, not javidpack, despite how often it is miscredited — adds a dedicated wing slot. Terraria Overhaul (987,543) is the awkward one: its GitHub was pushed on 29 August 2026 and is not archived, but its last public release was v5.0 BETA 14 on 31 March 2024. It is being worked on in the open without shipping a public build in over two years.

Do Terraria mods work together?
Mostly, and the dependencies are the part to get right. The ones stated on the Workshop pages themselves: Calamity needs Calamity Mod Music; Magic Storage needs absoluteAquarian Utilities; Fargo's Souls needs Fargo's Mutant Mod and Luminance; Catalyst and Infernum both need Calamity. Library mods you will accumulate either way include absoluteAquarian Utilities, Luminance, Subworld Library and InnoVault. A mod that refuses to enable is almost always a missing dependency.
What you will not find is an official compatibility matrix. Calamity and Thorium are widely played together, and third-party mods such as AlchemistNPC Lite declare support for both at once — but neither team has published a statement that they are compatible, and Calamity's wiki page on mod compatibility is gone. Treat “works with” as community practice, and add large content mods one at a time.
Until tModLoader's 1.4.5 build leaves beta, modding Terraria means running 1.4.4, and we will update this guide when that changes. Everything else we have written about the game sits on the Terraria hub — including why an ecosystem this size grew on a ten-dollar game, which is Terraria vs Minecraft.
FAQ
Does tModLoader work with Terraria 1.4.5?
Not on the stable branch. tModLoader still targets Terraria 1.4.4, and in September 2026 the team said it was not ready to set a release date for 1.4.5 support. A contributor-focused 1.4.5-dev beta branch exists on Steam.
Is the Calamity Mod still being updated?
No. The team announced on 10 August 2026 that development had ended, citing what it called an irrecoverably tainted reputation. The existing build is still live on the Steam Workshop and still installable, but no further content is planned.
Do Terraria mods work on console or mobile?
No. tModLoader's Steam listing declares Windows, Mac and Linux only, and there is no console or mobile distribution. Modding Terraria is PC-only.
Will mods break my existing Terraria world?
No. tModLoader keeps its saves in a separate folder from vanilla Terraria and installs alongside it. You can import a vanilla character into tModLoader, but a modded character cannot safely go the other way.
How many Terraria mods are there?
The tModLoader Steam Workshop listed 15,411 items on 20 September 2026. The most-subscribed content mod is Calamity at roughly 9.75 million subscribers; the most-subscribed utility is Recipe Browser at about 8.35 million.
