Is AION 2 Pay to Win? Membership, Quna and the Cash Shop Explained
AION 2's cash shop sells no gear, but a $15 membership unlocks the Market and the Quna-for-Kina exchange. Here is what money buys, and what free players miss.

First published. Checked against NC's business model notice and the 7 October 2026 patch notes; Steam review data read on 9 October 2026.
AION 2 does not sell gear in its cash shop, but it is not a game where money is irrelevant either. According to NC's own business model notice, a $15-a-month membership unlocks the player Market and the exchange where Quna, the premium currency, buys Kina from other players, and the paid Daeva Pass track includes upgrade materials. So the honest answer is: pay for speed and access, not for gear off a shelf.
This guide is built on NC's official notices (the July business model update, the membership perks list, the 7 October 2026 patch notes), the Founder's Pack press release and Steam review data we read on 9 October 2026. We have not played the game; where we report player opinion, we say whose it is.
Is AION 2 pay to win? The short answer
Not in the strict sense. NC's notice says shop cosmetics give "no gameplay or combat advantage" and that shop consumables, such as potions and resurrection stones, do not affect gear progression or long-term power, and can also be earned in play.
The catch is the economy around the shop. Gear and materials change hands on the Market for Kina, and Kina can be bought with Quna through the player exchange. A player with a credit card and a membership can therefore turn money into Kina, and Kina into whatever other players are selling. That is the route most "is it pay to win?" threads are really asking about.
What does each paid option actually do?
| Option | Price | What it gives | Effect on power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash shop cosmetics | Quna | Outfits, wings, pets, weapon skins, accessories | None, per NC |
| Cash shop consumables | Quna | Potions, resurrection stones and similar | Helps in a fight; NC says no effect on gear progression |
| Membership | $15 a month | Market, Kina–Quna exchange, members' Kina shop, extra gameplay perks | Indirect: access to trading and faster resource gain |
| Daeva Pass premium track | Quna, per character | Bonus cosmetics, items, upgrade materials, currencies | Some: upgrade materials speed up progression |
| Founder's Packs (pre-launch) | $24.99 / $49.99 / $99.99 | Early access, 30-day membership, supply chest, title, skins | Small: one-time chest plus 30 days of membership |
Why is the Kina–Quna exchange the real question?
NC describes two currencies. Kina is earned in play and is the currency of the Market. Quna is bought with real money and spent in the shop, on the Daeva Pass, or on the exchange. On the exchange, one player lists Kina for sale and another pays Quna for it; NC says every trade happens between players and the game itself makes no listings.
This cuts both ways. A paying player can buy Kina and spend it on the Market, which is the closest thing AION 2 has to buying power. A free player who farms Kina can sell it for Quna and spend that Quna on cosmetics or the premium pass, because NC says exchanged Quna works on anything sold for Quna. But both sides need an active membership: NC's notice states it is required to trade on the Market and the exchange.
What do free players miss without the membership?
The fullest official list of membership perks is the one NC published when it added a 30-day membership to the Founder's Packs on 21 August 2026. It includes Remote Storage, Personal Trading, the Wind Breeze Merchants, a higher Odyle Energy cap, the Market, the Quna Exchange Shop, and more Odyle Energy Cube selections in Expedition, Transcendence and Sanctuary content.
The Odyle Energy perks are the ones closest to progression: Odyle Energy is a resource NC also hands out as a launch reward, and members get a higher cap and more cube selections in three content types, although NC has not published the exact numbers. The Wind Breeze Merchants matter too. The 7 October patch added a Season 1 Resurrection Spiritstone there for 25,000 Kina, capped at 10 per server per week until the 15 December 2026 maintenance. It is a convenience item, but it sits behind the membership.

Is the Daeva Pass pay to win?
It is the one paid item NC openly says contains upgrade materials. Daeva Passes are sold per character, and each has a standard track available to everyone and an optional premium track bought with Quna that adds bonus rewards: cosmetics, items, upgrade materials and other currencies.
Two details soften it. The rewards still have to be earned by playing through the pass, so it rewards time as well as money. And because Quna from the exchange works on passes, a member who farms Kina can, in principle, pay for the premium track without spending real money. Alts are the expensive part: a pass bought for one character does nothing for the others.
What was in the Founder's Packs, and what changed after launch?
The July press release priced the packs at $24.99 (Standard), $49.99 (Deluxe) and $99.99 (Ultimate), one per account. All three gave five days of early access, a Daeva's Campaign Supply Chest and the Vanguard of Atreia title; the higher tiers added armour and weapon skins, and Ultimate added a pet, wings and a styling chest. The 30-day membership was added to every tier in August.
After early access feedback, NC said on 3 October that Founder's cosmetics would work on every character and server. The 7 October patch delivered it through a free Founder's Pack shop. The membership and the two chests stay one-time rewards, so the lasting advantage of a pack is cosmetic.
What are players saying about monetisation?
It is one of the most repeated questions on r/Aion2 since launch. A thread titled "How p2w is the game?" drew 39 comments on 4 October, and another asking how long a free player needs to reach top-tier gear drew 38 on 7 October. Both are discussions, not verdicts, and the answers in them disagree.
To put a number on it, we read the 500 most recent English-language Steam reviews (posted between 21:02 UTC on 8 October and 06:32 UTC on 9 October) and searched them for monetisation terms: p2w, pay to win, membership, subscription, cash shop, Quna and whale.
| Measure | Value |
|---|---|
| All reviews (all languages) | 62.4% positive (12,324 of 19,763), Mixed |
| Latest 500 English reviews | 42.4% positive (212 of 500) |
| Sample reviews mentioning monetisation | 98 of 500 (19.6%) |
| Negative sample reviews mentioning monetisation | 73 of 288 (25.3%) |
Monetisation is a real complaint, then, but not the only one: three in four negative reviews in our sample do not mention it. Insider Gaming, writing on 6 October, landed in a similar place, calling the model closer to paying for convenience than paying to win, while noting that the subscription shapes the economy.
What can free players claim right now?
NC is handing out progression items for free during the launch window, and some of them are exactly the materials people worry about paying for. These are the two that were still running on 9 October.
| Reward source | What you get | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Coupon TAKEFLIGHTAION2 (one per account) | Odyle Energy x4, Resurrection Spiritstone x5, Battle Enhance Scroll x10 | 13 October, 11pm PDT (14 October, 08:00 CEST) |
| Twitch Drops: Launch Rewards | Up to 10 hours of watch time: Odyle Energy x4, Skin Chest x10, Enhancement Stone x5,000, Soul Codex: Reset x2, Resurrection Spiritstone x10, two cosmetics | 16 October, 11:59pm PDT (17 October, 08:59 CEST) |
Should you pay for anything?
If you mostly quest, run dungeons and do not care about rankings, the official material suggests you can play free and miss mainly trading and some efficiency. If you want to sell your drops, buy specific items from other players or keep pace in competitive PvP, the membership is the purchase that matters, because it opens the Market and the exchange. The premium Daeva Pass is the next step, and cosmetics change nothing about power.
One practical point before you spend: if you might change server to play with friends, read our AION 2 servers and transfers guide first, because transfers have their own rules and limits.

What we don't know yet
NC's public notices do not list Quna bundle prices or the contents of each Daeva Pass season, and the Kina–Quna rate is set by players, so it will move. NC also said in July that some areas of the model may change, and it has already adjusted the Founder's Packs once. We will update this guide when NC publishes new pass details or changes the membership.

FAQ
Is AION 2 pay to win?
Not directly: NC's shop sells cosmetics and consumables that it says do not affect gear progression. Money can still speed up progression indirectly, because Quna buys Kina from other players on the exchange and the premium Daeva Pass includes upgrade materials.
How much is the AION 2 membership?
NC lists the membership at $15 a month. It unlocks the Market, the Kina–Quna exchange and a members-only shop that sells extra items for Kina, plus other gameplay benefits such as a higher Odyle Energy cap.
Can you play AION 2 without paying?
Yes. The game is free on Steam and PURPLE with no purchase required. Without a membership you cannot trade on the Market or use the exchange, so you rely on drops, quests and merchants for gear and materials.
Can free players buy items on the AION 2 Market?
NC's business model notice says an active membership is required to trade on the Market, and the membership perks list Market access as a membership benefit. Free accounts therefore cannot buy or sell there.
Is buying Kina from websites allowed in AION 2?
No. NC warned on 4 October 2026 that buying Kina or Quna from unauthorised parties breaks the Terms of Service and can lead to losing access to the game.
