Minecraft Dungeons II Gear and Enchanting Explained
Twelve slots, talismans, random effects and an enchantment library: how gear and enchanting work in Minecraft Dungeons II, plus the 149 power cap players report.

Minecraft Dungeons II gives every hero 12 equipment slots instead of the first game's six, and it moves enchantments off the loot table and into a library you build yourself. That second change matters most: you collect Enchantment Books, then have an enchantsmith put the effect on whichever piece of gear you choose.
This guide is built on Mojang's official gameplay systems article, the official FAQ, Xbox Wire's pre-launch preview and the 1 October Steam update notes, cross-checked against reviews from GamesRadar+, Destructoid and IGN. Where a number comes only from players on r/MinecraftDungeons, we say so. Checked on 6 October 2026, after the 1 October update.
How many gear slots does Minecraft Dungeons II have?
Twelve. Mojang's systems article says combat slots went from 6 to 12, and the official inventory screenshot on the Steam store page shows how they split: two weapons, four armour pieces, three artifacts and three talismans. Armour is no longer a single item; you equip a helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots separately.
| Slot type | Minecraft Dungeons | Minecraft Dungeons II | What changed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weapons | 2 | 2 | Ranged ammunition is now unlimited and recharges over time |
| Armour | 1 | 4 | Helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots are separate pieces |
| Artifacts | 3 | 3 | Still the active abilities you trigger on top of basic attacks |
| Talismans | — | 3 | New category of passive bonuses |
| Total | 6 | 12 | Doubled, per Mojang |
The ranged change is the quiet one. Mojang says ammunition for projectile weapons is now unlimited and recharges automatically, so there is no more scavenging for arrow bundles between fights. Every slot also carries an item power number, and the inventory shows your overall item power at the top.

What do talismans do?
Talismans are the new equipment category. Mojang describes them as passive bonuses: no button to press, just extra numbers on top of your abilities. Destructoid's review calls them rare and powerful passives. The store screenshot shows one in practice: the Twisted Tooth, at level 1, "increases souls gained by 40%".
That level tag is the useful detail. Talismans level up like the rest of your gear, and players in r/MinecraftDungeons report that damage scales with your gear power compared with enemy level, so a low-level talisman can drag the average down. Mojang hasn't documented the formula, so treat that as a community explanation rather than a rule.
Why do two copies of the same item have different effects?
Because effects are now partly random. Mojang's article says items have a chance to feature random effects, which is why two players can pick up the same armour piece at the same rarity and see different perks, the exact question raised in a 29 September r/MinecraftDungeons thread.
One reply in that thread describes the pattern by rarity: a single random effect on rare items, more on higher tiers, and uniques with a fixed built-in effect plus a random one, which can be rerolled at the blacksmith with Echo Shards. That comes from one player, and we have not found Mojang confirm the tiers, so check your own item tooltips. Long-time fans also point out the trade-off: armour sets in the first game each had a signature perk, while the sequel leaves much of that to chance and pushes build-making towards enchantments.
How does enchanting work in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Enchanting has moved from "whatever dropped" to "whatever you've collected". According to Mojang, the process works like this:
- Find an Enchantment Book while exploring. Each book holds one enchantment.
- The enchantment is added to your personal library.
- Visit the enchantsmith and apply any enchantment from the library to the gear slot you choose.
- Upgrade and level the enchantment over time as your build settles.
The practical upshot is that a good drop no longer needs to roll the right enchantment: you bring the enchantment to the item. GamesRadar+ notes that disenchanting is now non-destructive, which makes moving to a better piece less painful. Xbox Wire's preview names three early enchantments: Healing Smite (a chance of a healing circle after a kill), Ender Mines (exploding crystals) and Somersault (extra dodge rolls).
Do enchantments stack?
Some do. Xbox Wire's preview says Somersault can be stacked for additional dodge rolls. Players testing Tumbleshot in a 3 October r/MinecraftDungeons thread got conflicting results: one saw no extra arrows from two enchanted pieces, while another recorded three arrows per roll from three pieces and posted video of it. Another player reported that an artifact speed-boost enchantment did not last longer when doubled.
Neither Mojang nor the patch notes list which enchantments stack, so the sensible approach is to test with two pieces before committing a whole set to the same effect.
Where do Enchantment Books and Echo Shards come from?
Mostly from the optional content off the main path. Xbox Wire's preview says Rifts and Dungeons reward Enchantment Books and Echo Shards, and that Echo Shards are spent upgrading merchants, blacksmiths and equipment. IGN's review adds that new enchantment options unlock by clearing dungeons and completing quests. Boss Totems restart a beaten boss fight for another shot at its loot, according to Xbox Wire.
| Resource | Where it comes from | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Enchantment Books | Dungeons, Rifts, quests | Adds one enchantment to your library |
| Echo Shards | Rifts and Dungeons | Upgrading merchants, blacksmiths and equipment |
| Better gear | Boss Totem rematches; Soul Storms after the story | Higher item power and new effect rolls |
| Emeralds | Loot and chests across the map | Currency; cap raised from 9,999 to 99,999 on 1 October |
Soul Storms are the endgame loop. They unlock once the story ends, appear in random locations for a limited time, and fill part of the map with higher-tier enemies and loot, according to GamesRadar+ and Destructoid. One player in the stacking thread also reports that only the first 22 enchantments come from Overworld dungeons, with the rest found in the Sift; that is unconfirmed by Mojang.

What is the maximum power level?
Mojang hasn't published one. Several players in r/MinecraftDungeons report the same ceiling since launch week: the blacksmith stops upgrading gear at 149 power, while items found in the world can roll a few points higher, with reports ranging from 151 to about 155. Players link the 149 limit to character level 100.
If those reports hold, blacksmith upgrades are worth it up to 149, and anything above that only comes from fresh drops. The same players note that the gap between 149 and the mid-150s is small, so a piece with the right effects beats a few extra points of power.
How does loot work in co-op?
Up to four players can share a session through couch co-op, online cross-play or a mix of the two, with matchmaking and party codes for finding a group, per Mojang. GamesRadar+ reports that currency is split evenly and loot drops for each player separately, so a newcomer can't grab a veteran's high-level drop and gets their own lower-level one instead. Nobody has to fight over the good chest.
What has changed since launch?
Only one gear-related change so far. The 1 October update made the game playable on Steam Deck and pushed a balance change to all platforms that raised the emerald cap from 9,999 to 99,999, applied the next time you log in. No patch has yet touched enchantment values, talismans or the power ceiling; we will update this guide when one does.

FAQ
Is it worth stacking the same enchantment in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Sometimes. Xbox Wire confirms Somersault stacks for extra dodge rolls, but player tests of other enchantments such as Tumbleshot gave conflicting results on 3 October. Mojang hasn't listed which enchantments stack, so test with two pieces before enchanting a full set.
What is the max power level in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Mojang hasn't published a cap. Players report that the blacksmith stops upgrading gear at 149 power, which they link to character level 100, while items dropped in the world can roll slightly higher, around 151 to 155.
Why does the same armour have different abilities in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Items can roll random effects, according to Mojang, so two copies of the same piece at the same rarity can carry different perks. The enchantments you apply at the enchantsmith are the part of a build you fully control.
What are Echo Shards used for?
According to Xbox Wire's pre-launch preview, Echo Shards drop from Rifts and Dungeons and are spent upgrading merchants, blacksmiths and equipment.
What are talismans in Minecraft Dungeons II?
A new equipment category with three slots that gives passive bonuses. The official store screenshot shows the Twisted Tooth, which increases souls gained by 40% at level 1. Talismans have their own level, like the rest of your gear.
Can you remove an enchantment in Minecraft Dungeons II?
Yes. GamesRadar+ reports that disenchanting is now non-destructive, and because enchantments come from your personal library rather than from the item, you can apply them again to better gear as you find it.
