Steam Next Fest's Most-Played Demos: A Shopkeeper Sim Leads, and None of the Top 20 Disclose AI

Probably Stolen had 21,966 players in its Next Fest demo on Sunday morning. And while 36% of the fest discloses generative AI, none of the 20 busiest demos does.

The most-played demo of Steam Next Fest October 2026 is Probably Stolen, a cyberpunk shopkeeping sim from Questing Goose Studio and tinyBuild: 21,966 people were in its demo at 08:04 UTC on 25 October, more than the next three non-idle demos combined. And while just over 36% of the fest's catalogue carries a generative AI disclosure, none of the 20 busiest demos in our snapshot does.

This piece is built on Steam's own data: live player counts for 70 Next Fest demos read from Steam's public player-count API at 08:04 UTC on Sunday 25 October, each game's store page (release date, publisher, AI disclosure) and Steam's wishlist-ranked upcoming list, read the same morning. Daily totals and peaks come from Output Lag's hourly Next Fest chart, a third-party tracker that polls the same API, and are labelled as theirs. We have not played these demos; nothing below is a verdict on how good they are.

Which Next Fest demos are people actually playing?

Next Fest runs from 19 to 26 October, according to Valve's Steamworks event calendar, so this is the last full day. The table ranks the 15 busiest demos in our pool by players at the moment of the snapshot. Three of the top five are idle or desktop-companion games, which keep counting players while they sit in the background, so we flag them rather than pretend they compete with a party game on equal terms.

Leave out the idle titles and the pattern is clear. The top of the chart belongs to games built for short, repeatable loops (a shop to run, a match to play) and to games you play with friends: Worst Class Ever, just volleyball, Frostrail's co-op, Loftia, Fart Together and Among Shadows are all multiplayer. The big-budget entry, ArcheAge Chronicles, sits 14th.

How did Probably Stolen pull so far ahead?

It led from the start and never let go. Output Lag's daily reports, each time-stamped 9:30am, put the demo at 27,475 players on day two, 33,865 on day three, 36,386 on day four, 30,824 on day five and 31,617 on day six, with a fest peak of 39,696 on its live chart. That is a demo holding an audience for a week, not a launch-day spike.

Two things on the store page help explain it. The full game is three days away, on 28 October, so the demo doubles as a launch-week trailer; and it has an established publisher, tinyBuild, behind it. It is also one of only two demos in the top ten that rank inside Steam's top 100 by wishlists (81st; Frostrail is 66th). In other words, the most-played demo is also one of the best-prepared launches in the fest.

Day 6 (24 Oct)179,018Probably Stolen31,617Worst Class Ever, 22,740

The total rose by about 23% between day two and day six. More than half of that growth came from one game, Worst Class Ever.

Which demos rose and which faded during the week?

Worst Class Ever is the breakout. On day two it had 4,840 players and was fourth; by day four it had 16,960 and was second, and on day six it reached 22,740, according to Output Lag's reports. The store page describes a 1–6 player asymmetric party game in which five pupils hide among NPC classmates while one plays the teacher. It is not in Steam's top 500 by wishlists, which suggests the fest found it an audience it did not have going in.

ArcheAge Chronicles went the other way. The XLGAMES MMORPG was second on day two with 8,006 players and has a fest peak of 19,855 on Output Lag's chart, but it had fallen to 2,076 by day four and was at 1,102 in our Sunday snapshot. Frostrail followed a softer version of the same curve: 7,675 on day two, 4,331 on day six and 2,818 on Sunday morning, from a peak of 8,834.

Loftia7,4272,11528%

The Sunday column is a low-traffic hour (it is 4am on the US east coast), so every game looks smaller than its peak. The comparison still works between games: Probably Stolen keeps more than half of its best moment at the quietest time of day, while ArcheAge Chronicles keeps 6%.

Do wishlists predict Next Fest success?

Only loosely. Steam's wishlist-ranked list of upcoming games is a decent guide to what was already anticipated, and several of its top 100 are in the fest. But the overlap with the top of the player chart is thin, as the table shows.

The best-wishlisted demo in our pool, Emberville, had 642 players on Sunday morning, two days before its 27 October release. Haunted Paws ranks 40th by wishlists and had 713. Meanwhile three of the ten busiest demos (Worst Class Ever, just volleyball and Fart Together) are outside the top 500. A wishlist measures intent; a concurrent player count measures whether a demo is fun to come back to, or to play with other people, on the day.

How many Next Fest demos use generative AI, and are people playing them?

The AI question has dominated the conversation around this fest. PC Guide, working from SteamDB's filters on 20 October, counted 7,145 titles in the event and 2,593 with an AI content disclosure, just over 36%. In June, Eurogamer had counted 1,704 of 8,700, about 20%. On Reddit, a thread asking Valve for an AI filter reached 20,117 upvotes on r/pcmasterrace, and another on r/Steam passed 11,900.

We checked the store page of every demo in our 70-game pool for Steam's "AI Generated Content Disclosure" section. None of the top 20 by Sunday-morning players carries one, one of the top 30 does, and five of the top 50 do. Across all 70, it is ten, or 14%.

The highest-placed demo with a disclosure is Path of the Yaoguai, 25th with 616 players; its developer says some in-game images were generated with AI and then modified. The other disclosures in the top 50 describe AI-assisted art or 3D assets. This matches what Inverse found a year ago: in October 2025, three of the fest's top 50 demos disclosed AI (6%), against 17% of the whole event.

Does that mean players are rejecting AI-made games?

Not on this evidence alone, and the counter-case is worth stating plainly. Steam's disclosure is self-reported, and Valve's amended policy (January 2026) says AI-powered tools used for efficiency gains are not its focus; only generated content must be declared, so some busy demos may use AI tools without a label. Disclosure may also track budget rather than taste: a game with an established publisher and marketing behind it is likelier to top the chart, and plausibly less likely to ship AI art in a demo. And a single snapshot taken at 4am in New York favours European and Asian players.

What the numbers do show is narrower but still useful. The demos that drew the most players this week carry no AI disclosure, and the 36% of the catalogue that does is absent from the top 20 and rare in the top 50. If Valve adds the filter Reddit is asking for, the most-played list suggests few players would lose anything they are currently playing.

Which Next Fest games come out soon?

Several of the busiest demos turn into full releases within days of the fest closing, so the demo is a free way to try before buying. Dates are from each Steam store page.

What we don't know

Demo player counts are not sales, and Valve does not publish wishlist numbers, only the ranking. We cannot see how many people downloaded a demo and played it once, only how many were in it at a given moment. Output Lag's peaks are a third party's hourly readings and may miss short spikes between polls. We will check whether the demo leaders turned into launch-week players once Probably Stolen and just volleyball are out.
