Factorio 2.1 Is Now Stable: The Last Major Update, and 93 of the Top 100 Active Mods Are Ready

Factorio 2.1 left experimental on 23 October. Here is what changed, what it means for 2.0 saves and blueprints, and how many popular mods already support it.

Factorio 2.1 became the game's stable version on 23 October 2026, Wube Software announced in Friday Facts #449. It is the update the studio described in Friday Facts #440 as "our last major update of Factorio", after which the game moves to long-term support.

This explainer is built on Wube's Friday Facts posts, the Steam store page and the official mod portal's public API, which we read on 25 October 2026 at 07:34 UTC to count how many popular mods already support 2.1.

What's in Factorio 2.1?

No new planets, enemies or research trees. Wube describes 2.1 as a large collection of quality-of-life changes, small features and polish: the things it wanted for 2.0 but did not have time for. The update first went out as an experimental build in the summer and stayed there so mod authors had time to catch up, as Wube had planned in May.

Main changes in Factorio 2.1, as listed by Wube Software in Friday Facts #449 (23 October 2026)
AreaWhat changes in 2.1
Space platform logisticsRockets can carry several different items in one launch; a blank 'Import from' slot imports from all locations; platforms can request and provide items to other platforms in orbit
Platform flight and damageAsteroid damage depends on the asteroid's remaining health, not its speed; the platform hub is tougher; drag is based on mass, not width, so the 'pencil ship' is no longer the only fast design
Landing padA new cargo bay that inserters can unload, so you can feed trains, chests or belts directly from the landing pad
Circuit networkReads and writes can use different wire colours (the input/output split); labs, boilers, heat exchangers and pipes can be wired up; land mines can act as tripwires
QualitySpace Age can be played without Quality (the Recycler is now its own mod); quality locomotives and wagons; quality modules no longer work in asteroid reprocessing
BitersExpansion groups scale with evolution, and exploring early no longer reduces expansions near your base
Fixes and graphicsFluid mixing prevention returns; pumpjacks and burner miners can be flipped; new assembling machine, refinery, rocket silo and heat exchanger graphics
PlatformsNative ARM64 Linux build, which Wube says covers Steam Frame, Raspberry Pi headless servers and Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon

Will my 2.0 saves and blueprints still work?

They will load, but they may not behave the same. Wube warns that some changes, with the circuit input/output split as its own example, can break existing factory designs. The circuit change replaces what the studio calls the old "magic" self-subtraction, so combinator setups are the first place to look.

Are my mods ready for 2.1?

Most of the popular ones are. We sorted every mod on the portal by downloads and kept those whose newest release targets 2.0 or 2.1, so long-abandoned 1.1 mods do not skew the count. Of the 100 most-downloaded, 93 already had a 2.1 release on 25 October; of the top 50, 49 did.

The long tail is slower. Across all 24,198 mods on the portal, 5,162 have a newest release for 2.1 and 7,216 are still on 2.0, although 522 mods published a 2.1 release between 23 October and the morning of 25 October.

A 2.0 tag does not prove a mod is broken, and authors may simply not have pushed a new file yet. It does mean the mod has not been declared for 2.1, which is the warning Wube itself gives: most popular mods were updated during the experimental period, but some you rely on may not be ready.

Is this really the last Factorio update?

The last major one. In May, Wube said that after 2.1 it would focus on bug fixes, platform support and compatibility, and modding features, because it felt the game had reached a good place to conclude active gameplay development. The same post said some team members were already spending time on prototypes for other projects, with nothing to share for a long time. PC Gamer framed the release as the end of 14 years of development.

For context: Factorio left early access with version 1.0 on 14 August 2020, and Space Age launched with the free 2.0 update on 21 October 2024. Both the base game and the expansion cost $35 on Steam in the US.

How are Steam players reacting?

Calmly, which is normal for Factorio. On the Steam store page on 25 October, 96% of the 1,125 reviews from the last 30 days were positive, and 98% of 118,579 English-language reviews overall. Steam's daily review histogram shows 23 October, release day, as the busiest day of the past month for English reviews: 53 positive and 3 negative.

What 2.1 did not do is send Factorio into Steam's top 100 most-played games for 24 October. We have no earlier player figure of our own to compare against, so we cannot say whether the update moved concurrent numbers at all.

What should you do before updating?

  1. Back up your saves and blueprint library, because 2.1 files cannot be opened in 2.0.
  2. Check every mod in your list on the portal for a 2.1 release, starting with the ones in the table above if you use them.
  3. Test circuit-controlled builds first after loading: the input/output split is the change Wube singles out as likely to break designs.
  4. If you never liked Quality, a new Space Age run can now leave it off, since it is a recommended dependency that is enabled by default rather than a requirement.

It has been a busy week for long-running sims: RimWorld's 1.7 engine update took a very different route, swapping technology under a finished game rather than closing development.

FAQ

Is Factorio 2.1 free?

Yes. 2.1 is a free update for Factorio and covers the Space Age expansion too. Space Age itself remains a separate purchase, priced at $35 on Steam in the US, the same as the base game.

Will my Factorio 2.0 save work in 2.1?

Wube says 2.0 saves will load, but some changes, such as the circuit input/output split, may break existing designs. Saves and blueprints cannot be downgraded to 2.0 after updating, so back them up first.

Is Factorio 2.1 the last update?

It is the last major update. Wube said in May 2026 that it would then shift Factorio to long-term support: bug fixes, platform support and compatibility, and modding features, rather than new gameplay content.
