Gears of War: E-Day Crossplay and Cross-Progression Explained

Xbox and PC players, Steam included, can play together in Gears of War: E-Day, but there is no PS5 version and Steam needs a linked Xbox account for invites.

Yes, with limits. Gears of War: E-Day has crossplay between Xbox Series X|S and PC, including the Steam version, across campaign co-op, Horde Siege and Versus. There is no PlayStation 5 version to play with, and Steam players must link an Xbox account before they can send a cross-platform squad invite.

Progress is shared automatically between Xbox consoles and the Xbox app on Windows through Xbox Play Anywhere. Steam saves join that pool only if you choose to link your Microsoft account.

This guide is built on the official Xbox.com game page and FAQ, the Xbox Store and Steam listings, The Coalition's open beta FAQ on gearsofwar.com and Xbox Wire's early access post, all checked on 2 October 2026, during Premium early access and four days before the 6 October launch. Where no official page covers a question, we say so rather than guess. Updated on 6 October, launch day, for The Coalition's 5 October patch notes.

Which platforms is Gears of War: E-Day on?

Xbox Wire lists Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam, plus cloud play through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW. Early access opened on 1 October at 15:00 UTC for Premium Edition owners, and the full launch follows on 6 October at the same time.

PlayStation 5 is not on the list. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced E-Day as an Xbox console exclusive at the Xbox Games Showcase on 7 June 2026, even though a PS5 version had been rated by PEGI shortly before, as Gematsu and IGN reported. So any "PS5 crossplay" answer you see elsewhere is answering a question that does not exist yet.

Does crossplay work between Steam and Xbox?

Yes. Steam tags the game with Cross-Platform Multiplayer, and the Xbox Store listing shows both Xbox cross-platform multiplayer and Xbox cross-platform co-op. The Steam description promises 2–4 player online co-op and competitive multiplayer for up to 8 players across supported platforms, which matches the 4v4 Versus modes Xbox Wire describes.

What the official pages do not say is whether crossplay can be switched off, or whether Versus matchmaking keeps mouse-and-keyboard players apart from controller players. We found no statement from The Coalition on either point as of 2 October, so treat third-party pages that answer confidently with some suspicion.

Do you need a Microsoft account to play on Steam?

No, according to The Coalition's open beta FAQ: an Xbox or Microsoft account is not required to play on Steam, but you need to link one to send a cross-platform squad invite. The FAQ does not say how matchmaking treats Steam players who never link.

One caveat: the legal small print on the Steam store page still reads "Microsoft Account required", and the FAQ answer was written for the August beta. The FAQ is the specific answer and the Steam description itself calls account linking optional, but neither has been restated for the launch build.

To link an account, the beta FAQ says to open the social pane from the main menu, select the "Link Account" button in the upper-left corner and follow the Microsoft sign-in flow.

Does progress carry over between Xbox, PC and Steam?

Between Xbox and the Xbox app on PC, yes. The Xbox.com FAQ says Xbox Play Anywhere lets you buy once and play on Xbox Series X|S and PC with shared progression and achievements.

Steam is a separate purchase, and a Play Anywhere copy does not give you a Steam key. The Steam page says optional account linking lets you carry progress with roaming saves, so linking is what connects a Steam save to the Xbox pool. Whether multiplayer unlocks such as class progression follow the same route is not spelled out on any official page we checked.

If you played the August beta, only the Beta Player Title, Beta Medal and beta challenge rewards carry over to launch. The beta FAQ says class progression, player level and other medal progress are reset.

Do you need Game Pass to play online?

On Xbox, yes. Both Xbox.com and Xbox Wire state that online campaign co-op, Horde Siege and Versus require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, and the beta FAQ names Game Pass Essential as the minimum tier at launch.

On Steam, no Xbox subscription can apply if no Microsoft account is needed, and the Steam listing names none. For the Xbox app on PC, the official pages do not draw a separate line, so check the store page of the version you buy.

Versus (PvP)4v4, Ranked and Social playlistsNot documentedGame Pass Essential or higher

The Xbox Store lists online multiplayer for 2–12 players, which fits Horde Siege's multiple squads; the Steam page quotes up to 8 for competitive play.

Is aim assist on in crossplay Versus matches?

By default, yes. The beta known-issues list originally said aim assist only affected Campaign and Horde Siege. On 12 August 2026 the official Gears of War account on X admitted it had "oversimplified": the default setting enables a standard level of controller assist in every mode, Versus included, and the setting can be toggled.

That later post is the current official position. For PC players on mouse and keyboard, it means controller players in the same lobby can have assistance unless they turn it off.

Can you play on Steam Deck or in the cloud?

The Steam page says the game is optimised for handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X and Xbox Ally. Valve had not published its own Steam Deck compatibility rating on 2 October, so that claim comes from the publisher alone for now. Cloud play is available through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW, according to Xbox Wire.

What should you check before playing with friends on another platform?

  1. Make sure everyone is on Xbox Series X|S or PC: there is no PS5 version.
  2. Steam players should link an Xbox account from the social pane before trying to invite Xbox friends.
  3. Xbox players need a Game Pass tier that includes online multiplayer, Essential or higher.
  4. If you hit the "drone-snub" connection error, the beta FAQ says the game now uses UDP port 3074 rather than 443, so check that it is open on your network.
  5. Want couch co-op? Two-player split-screen works on Xbox consoles only.

What changed in the 5 October update?

The Coalition published patch notes on 5 October 2026 for an update released ahead of the global launch. It is a list of fixes, not a rules change: nothing in it alters which platforms can play together, how account linking works or the Game Pass requirement described above.

Three fixes matter for mixed-platform squads. Xbox sign-in should cope better when a device's system clock "differs significantly from the correct time", so syncing your clock remains the first thing to check. The "Bilefrog-Kalona" error, which could sign out a split-screen player after suspending and resuming the game, is addressed. And some Versus Social matches that sat on the "Waiting for players" screen should now start.

The last row fixes a launch known issue. The Coalition's 30 September launch post warned that players joining a lobby on an existing save would receive all of that save's earlier War Journal progress and Forge rewards. The update addresses it, so any advice to join a friend's campaign late and collect their progress is out of date.

What about offline play on PC? The same post's known issues included "On PC, offline play is unavailable until October 6". The 5 October notes do not mention offline play, so no official page we checked on launch morning confirms that it is now switched on. We will update this section when The Coalition says so.
