Dragon's Dogma 2 Vocations Explained: Which to Pick After Dark Arisen
All 10 Dragon's Dogma 2 vocations: what each does, how to unlock it, which ones pawns can use, the new Dark Arisen skills, and where players rank them now.

First published. Vocation data checked against Capcom's official site, the July 2026 Dark Arisen Q&A and Title Update 4.0 (9 October 2026).
Dragon's Dogma 2 has ten vocations, and Dark Arisen did not add an eleventh: it gave every existing vocation except Warfarer new skills instead. If you want one answer, early community testing favours Thief and Warrior for the expansion, while Fighter and Mage remain the safest picks for your main pawn.
This guide is built on the vocation descriptions on Capcom's official site, the developers' Dark Arisen Q&A, the Fextralife wiki for unlock steps and skill lists, and player testing posted on Reddit, each labelled as such. Checked against Title Update 4.0 and Dark Arisen (9 October 2026), on 14 October 2026.
What are all 10 vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2?
Six vocations are shared by the Arisen and pawns; four are reserved for the Arisen. The roles below paraphrase Capcom's own descriptions, and the unlock column follows the Fextralife wiki.
| Vocation | Weapon | Role | Pawns? | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Sword and shield | Melee damage and protecting the party with the shield | Yes | Basic vocation |
| Archer | Bow | Long-range damage, hitting weak points and high targets | Yes | Basic vocation |
| Thief | Two daggers | Fast combos, mobility, clinging to large enemies, stealing | Yes | Basic vocation |
| Mage | Staff | Support: magick attacks, weapon enchantments, healing | Yes | Basic vocation |
| Warrior | Greatsword or hammer | Heavy two-handed hits; charged strikes among the strongest in the game | Yes | Vocation Frustration quest (Klaus, Vernworth), then 150 DCP |
| Sorcerer | Archistaff | Pure offensive magick with long casts | Yes | Same quest as Warrior, then 150 DCP |
| Magick Archer | Magickal bow | Ranged magick arrows, healing and support | No | Side quest Put a Spring in Thy Step |
| Mystic Spearhand | Duospear | Melee and magick at any range; paralyse, throw objects | No | Meet Melve, then the Monster Culling quest line |
| Trickster | Censer | Illusions that turn enemies on each other; buffs pawns | No | Speak to Luz's spirit at the Reverent Shrine, then 200 DCP |
| Warfarer | Any weapon | Mixes skills from every vocation; lower base stats | No | Give Lamond three Newt Liqueurs at Geyser Hamlet |
Which vocations can pawns use?
Pawns are limited to Fighter, Archer, Thief, Mage, Warrior and Sorcerer. Capcom tags Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster and Warfarer as "exclusive to the Arisen", so a hybrid playstyle is something only your own character gets.
That shapes party building more than raw damage does. The Reddit tier list discussed below calls Mage and Fighter two of the best pawn vocations: one heals and enchants, the other protects allies with its shield. If your Arisen already deals damage, a support pawn is rarely a wasted slot.

What makes the Arisen-only vocations different?
The four exclusive vocations are hybrids or specialists that would not work well in a pawn's hands, and each comes with a trade-off. Capcom's descriptions are the clearest guide to what each one is for.
- Magick Archer fires magickal arrows that can attack or heal, and supports allies from range. Its custom skill unleashes a wide-area attack in exchange for lowering the Arisen's own maximum health.
- Mystic Spearhand mixes melee and magick with the Duospear, so it stays useful at any range. Capcom highlights its ability to paralyse enemies and hurl multiple objects at them.
- Trickster uses smoke from its censer to create illusions that trick enemies into fighting each other, and can temporarily push pawns beyond their normal limits. It plays as a commander rather than a damage dealer.
- Warfarer can use every weapon and learn skills from every vocation, swapping between them with its Rearmament skill. Capcom is explicit about the cost: lower base stats, so it relies on picking the right weapon for each situation.
Capcom's site also explains how most of these are earned: by deepening your relationship with a vocation maister until they grant access to their vocation, or teach the top-tier "maister's teachings" skills. That is why each exclusive vocation is tied to a specific character and quest in the table above.
Did Dark Arisen add new vocations?
No. In Capcom's Q&A published on 31 July 2026, Producer Oyama said there are no brand-new vocations. Instead, the free Title Update 3.2 raised equippable weapon skills from four to six, and the expansion adds new skills for each vocation. Our guide to every Dragon's Dogma 2 title update covers what is free and what needs the expansion.
Director Kinoshita added that existing skills gain higher levels too, and said he expects players to "retool" their favourite vocations. Norgan's Relic Appraisal system also hands out weapons, armour and skills with random parameters, so two players on the same vocation can end up with quite different kits.
What new skills does each vocation get in Dark Arisen?
Capcom has not published an official skill list, so the table relies on two independent guides that agree on the main names. Fextralife says most vocations got two new weapon skills plus a Maister skill, and Trickster got three; it counts 28 new weapon skills in total. Both sources say Warfarer received nothing exclusive, because it borrows skills from other vocations.
| Vocation | Obelisk skill (DCP, per KeenGamer) | All skills tagged new by Fextralife |
|---|---|---|
| Fighter | Whirlwind Strike (2,500) | Whirlwind Strike, Hurricane Strike, Shield Precision |
| Archer | Falcon Arrow (2,500) | Falcon Arrow, Kite Arrow, Cloudburst Shot |
| Thief | Fanged Schism (2,500) | Fanged Schism, Fanged Rift, Combustive Caper |
| Mage | Virtuous Bolt (2,500) | Virtuous Bolt, Exalted Bolt, Benediction |
| Warrior | Iron Cleave (2,500) | Iron Cleave, Steel Cleave, Titanic Cleave, Blood Pact |
| Sorcerer | Brontide (5,000) | Brontide, High Brontide, Chilling Embrace |
| Magick Archer | Shadebind Bolt (5,000) | Shadebind Bolt, Shadefetter Bolt, Harmonic Pentad |
| Mystic Spearhand | Bataille Twinne (2,500) | Bataille Twinne, Bataille Idole, Hindringe Mirke |
| Trickster | Curing Cloud and Diverting Fume (2,500) | Curing Cloud, Vitalizing Vapor, Diverting Fume, Rousing Aroma, Giant's Pommel |
| Warfarer | None | None |
KeenGamer identifies Shield Precision (a perfect parry that drains stamina quickly), Benediction (trades some maximum health for an automatic ally revive) and Hindringe Mirke as Maister skills. It did not name the Maister skill for the other vocations, so treat the rest of the third column as a list, not a map of which skill comes from where. Fextralife also tags the core skills Magick Barrier (Mage, Sorcerer) and Buoyant Brume (Trickster) as new, but those arrived in the free Title Update 3.2, not the expansion.
How do you unlock the new Dark Arisen skills?
Each vocation has an Obelisk of Benediction somewhere in Norgan. Per Fextralife and KeenGamer, you learn the new skills there with Discipline Points, while higher tiers need offering flames; IGN's review instead says the first tier costs rift points, so check the price at the obelisk itself. KeenGamer adds that the Warrior obelisk sits inside the Mad-Lord's Chapel. Norgan opens early, from Brant at the Vernworth tavern, as explained in our guide to starting Norgan and the Lost Rites.
Which vocation is best in Dark Arisen?
There is no official ranking, and the expansion is five days old. One of the most-discussed attempts so far is a tier list posted to r/DragonsDogma2 on 13 October 2026, built from one player's testing on Hard Mode. Read it as an early snapshot, not a verdict.
| Vocation | Poster's verdict | What replies added |
|---|---|---|
| Thief | In a league of its own | Several call Formless Feint overpowered and expect a nerf |
| Warrior | Performs very well despite the difficulty | — |
| Archer | Solid; better than Magick Archer in Norgan | One player pairs it with Fighter for crowds |
| Fighter / Sorcerer | Average; Fighter better as a tank pawn | — |
| Mage | Unchanged; one of the best pawn vocations | — |
| Mystic Spearhand | Fine, nothing special | One reply rates Mirour Shelde above Formless Feint |
| Magick Archer | Pushed into a support role by Dark Arisen scaling | Still top three in the base game, per the poster |
| Warfarer | Lower damage felt on Hard Mode | Disputed: six skill slots let it borrow Recovery Arrow and Thief skills |
| Trickster | Weakest | No strong defence in replies |
Two caveats. Hard Mode changes the maths, so a vocation that struggles there may be fine on Normal. And relic rolls matter: the poster themselves expect Warfarer's strength to depend on finding very specific gear.

Can you change vocation later?
Yes. Fextralife notes that vocations are acquired and changed at a Vocation Guild, such as the one in Vernworth, with Warrior and Sorcerer costing 150 DCP and Trickster 200 DCP to acquire. Because the Arisen-only vocations need quests, you will usually start on one of the four basic vocations and switch once you have tried a few.
Which vocation should you start with?
New players: Fighter or Thief. Fighter is forgiving thanks to the shield; Thief is fast, mobile and the early community favourite for Norgan. Prefer to stay at range? Archer is the steadier choice in the expansion, according to early testing, and it needs no unlock quest.
Returning players with a finished save: Warrior if you like big, committed hits, or Warfarer if you enjoy building around gear and mixing skills. For your main pawn, Mage or Fighter keeps the party alive while you experiment.
We will update this guide if Capcom rebalances vocations in a title update. For everything else on the game, from patches to the expansion, see our Dragon's Dogma 2 hub.
