The Outlast Trials Hits a Record 94,507 Steam Players After a 90% Autumn Sale Discount
Red Barrels' co-op horror game more than doubled its 2023 launch peak once it dropped to $3.99. Here are the numbers, the reviews and when the deal ends.

The Outlast Trials is a first-person survival horror game from Red Barrels, the Montreal studio behind Outlast (2013) and Outlast 2 (2017). It is a prequel to both: players are Reagents, test subjects forced through a Cold War experiment run by the Murkoff Corporation, and each trial asks them to complete objectives while hiding from, distracting or briefly stunning the facility's killers rather than fighting them.
Trials support one to four players in co-op, and the game can also be played alone. It launched in early access on PC on 18 May 2023 and left early access on 5 March 2024, when it also arrived on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Red Barrels has kept it running as a live game with seasonal updates, limited-time events and modes such as Invasion, in which other players join a trial as impostors.
On this page we collect AFK Journal's coverage of The Outlast Trials: player numbers and records from Steam's own charts, review scores from critics and Steam players, and explainers on updates and events as Red Barrels announces them. Every figure is linked to its source and dated.
