RimWorld Climbs Steam's Weekly Chart After Ditching Unity: What Update 1.7 Changes
RimWorld 1.7 swaps Unity for Ludeon's own Waylith engine. Here is what changes for saves and mods, how to try it, and what Steam's numbers show a week on.

RimWorld is a sci-fi colony simulation from Ludeon Studios. Players guide a handful of crash-landed colonists on a remote frontier world, while an AI storyteller decides which raids, diseases, trade caravans and disasters come next. The game left early access with its 1.0 release on 17 October 2018 and is sold on Steam for Windows, Mac and Linux, where it holds a Metascore of 87.
Eight years on, it remains one of the best-rated games on Steam, with an Overwhelmingly Positive rating from more than 240,000 user reviews, and Ludeon has kept expanding it with paid expansions such as Royalty and Biotech alongside free updates. Its modding scene is unusually large: players routinely run colonies with hundreds of mods installed.
In October 2026 Ludeon announced update 1.7, which moves RimWorld from Unity to Waylith, the studio's own engine built with RocketWerkz's BRUTAL framework, and teased a new game on the same technology. This hub collects our coverage of RimWorld: news on the engine switch and future updates, Steam player data, and guides as new content arrives.
