Playground Games moved the Horizon Festival to Japan for its sixth entry, and the choice does more work than a change of scenery usually does. Previous Horizon maps have been built around a single dominant idea — Britain's seasons, Mexico's altitude range. Japan gives the studio several at once: a dense city grid, mountain passes cut through spring snow walls, cherry-blossom hairpins, rural coast. The result is a map whose surfaces change character every few minutes rather than every few kilometres.

The systems around it are recognisably Horizon. More than 550 cars at launch, a four-season cycle, a weekly Festival Playlist, and the open-world event structure the series has run since 2012. What is new leans domestic rather than competitive: a Collection Journal built on Japanese stamp-collecting, three permanent Car Meet locations, a plot of land called the Estate that players build on themselves, and CoLab, a multiplayer rebuild of the EventLab creation toolset.

It launched on 19 May 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC, day one on Game Pass, and broke the concurrent-player record for an Xbox Game Studios title on Steam. A PlayStation 5 version was announced at the same time as the game itself and, as of 20 September 2026, still has no release date.
