Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams Revealed After Dev Restart
Square Enix restarted Dragon Quest XII from scratch and gave it a new name: Beyond Dreams. Here's everything confirmed at the 40th anniversary event.
- Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate has been renamed Beyond Dreams and restarted from scratch after hitting 'a lot of hurdles.'
- Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World was announced for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC — starring DQ5's Bianca and Nera.
- Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026.
What Is Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams?
Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams is the new identity of what was originally announced in 2021 as Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. Square Enix revealed the renamed title on May 27, 2026, during a special broadcast marking the franchise's 40th anniversary — 40 years after the original Dragon Quest launched in 1986.
The game has been restarted from scratch. Executive producer Yosuke Saito acknowledged at the event that the team had encountered 'a lot of hurdles,' prompting a full development reset. As confirmed by Gematsu and Game Informer, no release date has been announced, and the platforms have not been officially specified.
According to series creator Yuji Horii, the central question driving Beyond Dreams is: 'What lies beyond dreams? Surely not a world of darkness, but a bright and exciting future.' The game follows a young hero plagued by strange visions in their sleep — a markedly different premise from the darker, adult-oriented tone previously teased for The Flames of Fate.

Why Was Dragon Quest XII's Development Restarted From Scratch?
The restart is a significant turn of events for the franchise's flagship sequel. Saito explained that as the team worked through the original Flames of Fate concept, discussions with Horii about what a mainline Dragon Quest should fundamentally be led them to reconsider the project's core direction. That rethinking resulted in a full team reshuffle and a ground-up restart — years into development.
The original 2021 reveal positioned The Flames of Fate as a darker, more mature Dragon Quest — a deliberate tonal shift intended to reach new audiences. The pivot to Beyond Dreams, with its dream-world premise and optimistic framing ('a bright and exciting future'), suggests Square Enix has moved back toward the franchise's more accessible, classically adventurous DNA. Series stalwarts Akira Toriyama's character designs and Koichi Sugiyama's music will carry forward, as they have in every mainline entry.
The Kotaku report notes that the restart means players should expect a considerably longer wait than originally anticipated. With no platforms announced and no window given, Beyond Dreams could easily be several years away. This is not unprecedented for Dragon Quest: DQ XI itself was in development for years before it launched in Japan in 2017.

What Else Was Announced at the Dragon Quest 40th Anniversary Event?
Beyond Dreams was not the only headline from the anniversary broadcast. Square Enix also announced Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, a new entry in the monster-collecting spin-off series, confirmed for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. It stars Bianca and Nera — the two iconic female leads from Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride — and Square Enix confirmed it will release before Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams.
The broadcast also confirmed Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2, arriving September 24, 2026. The port offers two display modes: one prioritising graphical fidelity and one prioritising performance. Pre-orders opened immediately after the announcement, as reported by the PlayStation Blog and Pure Xbox.
Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams has no release date and no confirmed platforms — expect a multi-year wait. In the meantime, Dragon Quest XI S arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on September 24, 2026, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World is set to launch even before DQ12.
